once again begging people to understand the difference between "this [book comic movie etc] was objectively bad" and "this [book comic movie etc] just wasn't for me"

Oh God I am now flashing back to being in a fandom where not liking the entire canon made you a pariah never mind the second half of canon told a very different story than the first promised. The number of times I had to explain that the later books did not work FOR ME but they could love them...
I tend to use food analogies. “This book was like excellent pistachio ice cream; not *my* favorite flavour but really well made so if it sounds like your flavour, you should give it a try.”
A good example of this is that dude who said the Black Widow film had a terrible villain, when the villain was basically a sex trafficker who stole girls, made them into killers and cut out their reproductive organs. Like, dude, maybe you’re telling on yourself and your lack of empathy.
Yes! People keep forgetting that sometimes things are just not for them! Like the amount of people who see a sequel or a remake that start their reviews with “I hated the original” or “I hate this genre” Then why are you here?? Spend your time doing something you’ll enjoy instead, maybe?
And its sibling,”this [thing] is my favorite and therefore is objectively good and therefore if you don’t like it/aren’t interested in it you are a bad person.”
About 90% of the time, I assume the book just wasn’t for me. Rarely do I consider a book objectively bad. Someone put in a lot of hard work and effort to create what I was reading, it’s not likely bad.
the other day i saw a post that was like, "this is the worst comic i've ever read in my life throw it in the trash set the whole industry on fire i hated it" but they hated it bc it wasn't the right kind of ~representation~ lmao
idk, there are plenty of comic characters I love that I'll fall off of reading bc I don't mesh with how the writer of a run might see them. Doesn't mean the work is BAD, it's just ... not for me.

Music was my first yeah it's good but it's not for me things!
(I *love* Conan the Barbarian, but it's so unintentionally campy!)
Hell, I'm an unrepentant "Lair of the White Worm" fan; it's not great cinema, but it's FUN.
Funny side effect, thinking of media in this way has led to me enjoying and appreciating more things because I can better see what they were going for
Those are the genre, you just don’t like the genre then.
in *this* economy?
Like, maybe that was a middling Broadway musical, but have you seen my friend's one-man show that he does at the hamburger place on Tuesdays???
