And those of us born in between the date ranges where just one, not two, shot was given.....yeah, we're scheduling our measles shots. 😡 the insanity is real.
We are Canadian, 74 and 75, and got them last week. We had no idea if we had ever had the shots in the UK, our birth country. Better to be safe than sorry.
I received mine a month ago. Never did I ever imagine I would need it. We’ve entered the era of ditching the bingo card because each day it fills quickly with the most dystopian entries we never thought we’d experience.
Was it only effective if it was the live vaccine? Thankfully my mom wrote that I had the live version in 67, but still received the booster in 79. My state records show I didn’t have either because my pediatrician retired and my records weren’t forwarded.
Are you guys getting boosters or the original vaccine? Im curious because I had the vaccine as a kid. I was wondering if I needed to get a booster. TIA.
I was vaccinated as a child as well. ~20 years ago, there was an outbreak at my uni and didn't have my immunization card, so I had titers done. No immunity, so I got a booster. Tested again about a month ago, and still no immunity, so I just got another booster.
Yeah, I got my single shot as a baby but had to get a booster last month. Never thought we’d be here, but yup. I’m increasingly anxious about fall, when we used to get our updated flu and COVID jabs. Those updates apparently are not happening. We’re doomed.
If you are over 65 there is a Covid shot available now. I just got my shot #7 a month ago. I have not had Covid or any reaction to the shots except some soreness at the injection site. The very first shot in late February ‘21 gave me the most soreness.
I got a booster and made my husband get one as well. The outbreak not being contained is too risky to not be fully vaccinated. As a nurse, I recommend any adult get a booster, or at least have titers drawn to make sure you’re still protected, because measles is highly contagious. Stay safe everyone
I was traveling to Texas last month and had a titers done to see if I needed a measles vaccine. The technician laughed, but I told her I was traveling and didn't want to risk it. Measles was good, but needed an MMR booster. #science
An actual case of measles gives you lifetime immunity. Same for most of the viruses. I had chicken pox twice, and pneumonia the second time. Glad there’s a vaccine now.
Now why are you sitting around and typing? Go outside, spread the virus, maybe kill some children, and make your beloved utterly trustworthy vaccine companies more money.
We got ours, too -- can't wait for the next eradicated disease to be resurrected in the United States. And with Dr. Oz now saying we should use fewer drugs, it's gonna be turnips soaked in vinegar and strained through the sock of a virgin instead of antibiotics to help us through.
I never had measles but had the two standard doses of MMR in childhood. There was a weak batch of vaccines in the 60s so my doctor said the only way to be sure is to have a blood titer to check your antibodies. Or, much simpler, just get the MMR. It won’t hurt to get if you don’t need it.
Good. Many folks don't know if they were born after 1957 and vaccinated before 1968, that vaccine may not have been effective. People in that category should request a blood test to see if they have antibodies, and get the vaccine again if they don't. Glad you did, David.
I got my MMR and pneumococcal at the same time. My MMR records were unclear. Current with flu, COVID-19, and Tdap. Please get your shingles shots if you had chicken pox or were exposed to chicken pox. I know someone who had shingles. 😟Not an anti-vaxxer, but vaccines were then unavailable to them.
There are a few years in the 1960’s where they recommend that people born in those years get a booster. Apparently they were using a less effective vaccine back then.
Thank you so much for the info! My husband and I were just talking about this yesterday and wondered if we were ok, or if we needed to get vaccinated again.
I am in the age group that got immunity because we got measles. Mom sent us all down to play with the neighbor kids who had them. She said she'd rather we all got 'em at the same time. This was pre-vax.
I was born in 1961. My PCP didn’t want me to get a vaccine I didn’t need. I just wanted the shot to be safe. He didn’t smirk TOO much when my titres came back. But I got my Covid shot today!
Test, don't guess. If you're older, get your titers checked - you may need a booster. Agree that this was a nothing burger in past years, because cases were so low and herd immunity high - if you weren't traveling to a country where measles is endemic.
Shoot, that’s what they want. Between boomers and the sick they are waiting for us to drop off the earth. That’s one way to get their paws on our social security.
They’ve ALWAYS made it hard for blacks to vote. Even to the point of MAKING THEM PAY TO CAST THEIR VOTES WHEN THEY WERE FINALLY GIVEN THE RIGHT TO. Now explain to me how racism and classism hasn’t ALWAYS EXISTED?
But hey, they’ve been doing that to the black community FOREVER. Hence why we are seeing lynching and killing of blacks skyrocketing. Yet us 3/5 humans don’t get so much as an investigation BECAUSE ITS THE POLICE DOING IT. You know…ORIGINAL SLAVE CATCHERS. That’s why the police were created.
Grab a sign and get outside today. Let them hear you!!! You are angry. Let them know that!!!
Soon our voices may be silenced!!!
Use your freedom now!!!
Be loud!!! Be strong! Be brave!
But what bothers me most is that it only took for a racist POS to come into power for others to finally see what WE HAVE for decades. He’s allowed all the other rabid dogs out from the shadows and the blood lust, deputized militia is taking people off of the streets in broad daylight.
It’s insane that so many still don’t see that this has been the plan all along. This is why they’ve bee gerrymandering the black vote so hard. Blacks don’t vote republican. For their plan to succeed they must suppress black people…YET AGAIN. RINSE AND REPEAT. THE DISABLED TOO…geez.
Once I realized I was in that age group where the vaccine may not still be effective, I got my blood work done. My titers still showed high immunity, so I’m good to go!
I re-did mine in 2020 after a wapo commenter pointed out that those of a certain age may not be protected. Sure enough, it was also on the CDC website. I would urge anyone of unknown type of vaccination status to get an update. 👍 also doesn’t hurt to look at other boosters you might need.
Mine is scheduled at the end of the month along with my next Covid booster. I was born in that hole in the mid 1960’s where they recommend getting a booster.
I got an MMR in August (I work with school kids.) Had back and joint pain for about a month and a dry measles type rash for a couple of weeks. Better that than measles, no?
My husband and I had measles 65 or 70 years ago, so recently we had blood tests to check our immunity levels. He remembers having a really, really bad case, and his Antibody Index reflects an incredibly high level of immunity even now. I'm just ordinarily immune as I wasn't as sick as he was.
If you ever watched Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show", you probably only got one dose of the MMR vaccine. Call your mom to find out. Two doses was not the norm until 1989. Your local health department can get you a second one cheap or even free if you need it.
True, but the more people who stay up-to-date on their vaccines, the less likely those who can't get vaccinated are to be exposed to a deadly disease. Vaccines don't just protect you, they protect your community.
Yes. Of course. But there will not be enough to produce the protection needed. If you’re immunocompromised it’s still best to avoid crowds and wear a mask if indoors in crowded spaces.
True, in many areas vaccination rates have fallen to the point herd immunity is no longer a thing. And measles is one of the most easily spread diseases known to man.
I post something like this in most measles threads I see. Carson left The Tonight Show in 1992, so anyone who stayed up that late at that time likely was vaccinated far earlier, before they started school. I find pop culture references like this to be better than just giving dates.
I can’t recall if I had either the measles as a child or received the MMR vaccine. My PCP will do a bloodtest later this month to check for measles anti-bodies. Hopefully I am good but if not I will get the MMR vaccine.
I know vaccines are effective and safe. Didn’t RFK get a brain-worm shot?
The medical community assumes that people born before 1957 have had the measles and so have protection. We know what happens when we assume. Get your titers checked to see if you have immunity to be sure.
70 yr old on Medicare here. A simple blood test will check your immune levels for MMR (measles, mumps, rubella). Ask for it the next time you need bloodwork for something.
Really? Wow. I went to Walgreens to get mine. They didn't care as long as my insurance paid, which I'm lucky enough for that to not be a problem.
But that was a few years ago.
I had measles when I was only 1yo. From what I've read (I'm not a doctor) if you had measles as a child, you don't need to get the vaccine. You should be immune.
But if you have any doubts, call your doc.
I had none. I'm one of the fortunate ones who generally doesn't get side effects from vaccines outside of minor arm soreness, so your mileage may vary.
Thank you! I usually don’t get side effects either, but I have to say, the last Covid vaccine knocked me off my feet! I even got a fever, and I didn’t even have a fever the two times I had Covid - not even the first time in 2021 pre-vax when I was REALLY sick!
That's not entirely accurate, David. The CDC was recommending a measles booster for older adults before Trump took office, particularly if their birth date falls before the mid 1960s, based on formulation of the vaccine today vs. what you had in childhood. Had that convo w. my doc at 2024 physical.
Sure would be interested to know if duder has stock in the pharma that makes measles vax, wouldn't it? (also got a measles vax 5 years ago before traveling because I had no immunity)
I got my booster a few years ago when the CDC announced that some doses from the 60s didn't last as long as they should have. That was during the NYC outbreak I think.
Got MMR vaccine because they don't have singular measles vaccine here and there are active outbreaks all around. NW Europe that is... air travel becomes dicier than it already was.
I got one about 6 weeks ago. In that questionable age range. With all the BS going on, I’ll be damned if I’m going to let measles be what takes me out. 🤬
Those of us in the military were required to get the MMR vaccine, which includes measles. We also got every other vaccine known to mankind, and if God forbid you lost your shot record, you would get them all again, right away. One guy on my crew got 3 shots in the left arm and 3 in the right arm.
If the outbreak would have been contained, as normally would have occurred, no one would have needed boosters. Instead it’s being able to just spread across the country unmitigated because our leaders are fascists trying to kill us.
I had to get every vaccine you'd get before you go to school when I went to college because I would be around small children. You wouldn't be accepted to the program I was in if you didn't. They were SERIOUS too. This was pre covid.
I’m caught up on the Covid vaccine, flu, RSV, and Shingles. Now for the measles vaccine. And in September/October I’ll repeat it again, except for shingles. 👍
I had measles as a baby. and am in my 60's now.
My family doctor said bc I had measles, I did not need to get a measles vaccine.
Maybe I better do more google research on that.
If you are older, those childhood vacations may need to be boosted. Highly recommend getting with your Dr and seeing what you may need. I was good for Measles, but had to get one for Mumps. 💉
I got one 2 weeks ago, before my visit to west TX, I have no record of having it or being vaccinated since I was born in 1956... Doc said better safe than sorry.
The vaccines that we got when we were kids should last our lifetime, did you miss out on that one? I also heard there were a few years towards the late 60s when if you got it, you should still do it again anyway?
Yeah, I'm thinking I should too. I had one of the pre-MMR measles vaccines. Not sure if it was the one that proved to be ineffective. I remember kids at school contracting measles, but luckily, I avoided it. I did catch the mumps and remember we all had chipmunk cheeks.
You can have titers checked and get revaccinated for anything with a low value. It’s cheaper and easier to get the MMR than to test for them and it won’t hurt you to repeat it.
I looked at mine too. My mom gave it to me when I moved out. She said it was my turn to keep up with my stuff. I even have my original birth certificate 🤣. Im still gonna get a booster anyway. I’m 54 so I think I probably should. Better safe than sorry. 🤷🏽♀️
Thanks for that! I need a titer test. I got my first one in 1980, but they either missed my 2nd or didn't record it. I had one before I started college in 1997.
My insurance (which is pretty good) did not cover mine. CVS was really expensive too. I called to County Health Dept. I was able to get one there, they do charge $115 total. She did say, if unable to pay, you can call around to other locations & ask if they have grants and if they are covered.
For general reference for everyone, your doctor can order a titer to check if you still have MMR immunity to see if you need re-vaccination. It's an easy blood test. Just got mine done.
I'm not the OP, but for me it took the CDC to tell us that some people born in the 60s may have gotten vaccines that were not standing up to the test of time. I think it has to do with live vaccine or not.
Anyway, a few years ago, they suggested we get a booster. And, that's on top of the booster we would have gotten as children. It's not like our parents had us get the 1st round, but skipped the 2nd.
If you were pregnant in the last 10 (or 7?) years, you should have gotten one.
My doctor told me when I couldn't remember since my 2005 shot that it's ok to get another one if you can't remember.
If they didn't recheck to confirm the booster took, have them do it. Sometimes it doesn't. It's important to know if you're a nonresponder because they handle it differently if we get exposed.
Can you explain more? I may be a nonresponder: I was vaccinated as a kid, but had no immunity as an adult, so I got a booster (20ish years ago). Retested a few weeks ago, and I had no immunity, so I got another booster.
I'm flinging two links up. One has exposure management guidance. The other shows how colleges handle when med students have this happen. They throw in the towel and acknowledge them as non-immune. I've read some stuff on genetics contributing to this but haven't been able to find it again.
Thank you so much for this. When I got the booster, I asked if I should follow-up with my doctor, given my history, but was told follow up in two years! I'm so glad I saw your post, and thank you for graciously providing the info to me.
Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox, which stays in your body for the rest of your life after infection. No connection between measles and shingles. Shingles vaccine protects you from shingles, not from measles, which is caused by a different virus.
My husband and I did blood tests last month to determine if we were still immune. It’s a titer that determines antibodies and it was a relief to know we’re covered for our grandchild

I believe those were the years. Because they didn’t use a live vaccine then.
And I think anyone before them should have natural immunity? I forget. You could easily Google it.
And yeah, it’s boosters.
Now why are you sitting around and typing? Go outside, spread the virus, maybe kill some children, and make your beloved utterly trustworthy vaccine companies more money.
A simple yes or no - yes getting money, no not getting money, would be enough!
Living in this country while being poor is going through every day knowing that your government hates you and wants to see you dead.
Good news!
I’m prob right behind you.
Thanks RFK Jr.
Or is it recommended that we get a booster if we are in our 50s?
The face of suppression is the same…it just got a more palatable name…GERRYMANDERING/GERRYMANDER

But yes, much better than measles!

Just like those who haven’t gotten theirs need to get it ASAP before it’s too late

Fuck anti-vaxxers in general and fuck RFKJ in particular
As you know, there aren’t any measles therapeutics because we basically eradicated it 25 years ago. This is all so dumb and all so preventable
Thank you, California, for requiring MMR vaccinations for school enrollment.
If in doubt, get a vaccine booster shot.

This is life now. Protecting ourselves when others won't.
It will be difficult to empathize with them if/when they and their families fall ill.
I found my old vax record
and it turns out I had an update in 1983, so I'm good.
My doctor told me when I couldn't remember since my 2005 shot that it's ok to get another one if you can't remember.
Had my COVID booster today.
