Oh good, a government promising to release drones to monitor people's every move. Also, Rupert Lowe's reply is so badly written it made me shudder (quite apart from the idiocy of the sentiment).
No, monitoring fly tipping hot spots. FFS there aren’t enough drones or operators to monitor everybodys bloody visit to a cash point or the post office or pub. Get a grip mate
And breathe. It was a tongue-in-cheek comment, so probably didn't warrant the acerbity of your response. I suspect the practicalities of the scheme are difficult regardless of how many drones and operators there currently are.
There was a lay-by near our house in Somerset that used to get the occasional dump of ‘grot’ but the most unusual one we had was what appeared to be an entire van load of Salmon … (!)
beyond the content, I'm continuously amazed that PM comms still use a platform owned by an explicit adversary, despite the reach of said platform being down 90+% *and* the popular wedge very likely in the PM's favour. Small but revealing example of completely misunderstanding government gravity
I hesitate to apply that label to them because they are at least a bit more progressive than the Tories in some matters. But I can definitely see why people would apply that label to them - our Overton Window has lurched to the right in recent decades.
I realise not the point but instead of more sending drones he could stop councils making it harder and more expensive to go the tip. Norfolk council now have an appointment system and upped rates - guess the result? (Your point of course is totally valid).
They tried appointments at our local dump, and there was so much backlash they actually ditched it. If you fight, they might listen?
It's ridiculous to make access harder and more expensive and NOT expect fly tipping!
isn't that the point? that u push reform in to making demands that alienate them from the electorate....and that reform oblige because that's the only way they have to differentiate themselves?
It's dumping trash at the roadside instead of taking it to the "tip" (dump). Usually large objects like furniture or DIY waste that they don't want to pay to properly dispose of.
This is brilliant! But in case you don't know, it's dumping rubbish in the road or laybys or anywhere other than the dump. Usually sofas and mattresses in my experience.
The point is that the right want to give an impossible task to the government, where nothing is ever going to be good enough, is actually unachievable, that’s the whole point! I wish people would open their eyes in this country!
Well, exactly! Labour are now implementing policies even the Tories shyed away from trying. Their betrayal of the trans community is absolutely unforgiveable!
Will be interesting seeing whether Starmer actually follows through with that threat, because fly tipping really is a blight.
Lowe is just the worst sort of racist, though, jumping on any issue to shoehorn his "send them back" agenda for his bigoted followers to become euphoric over.
Imagine the Labour Party returning to it's core values and prioritising policies for the good of the people. Rather than governing by bandwagon.
Nah, me neither.

I'd tone it down a bit to impounding their vehicle for a protracted length of time, but fly tipping is a major problem in rural Kent where my partner's family lives. Piles of waste, usually from house renovations, dumped in places they know don't have CCTV to catch them at it.
Or just fine them to hell rather than faffing about with the expense of impounding or crushing vehicles. What happens when a fly-tipper borrows someone else's car or steals one?
Yes using someone else's car would an an extra layer of complication to it but getting them to pay the fines could take a long time time + court procedures etc, whereas I guess what Starmer's angling at is swift retribution and strong deterrent.
Not at all, that's why I suggested impounding as a halfway measure. But I can also see how hundreds or even thousands of flytipping cases going through an already backlogged court system would be unhelpful and not do much deterring.
so, I had to look up fly-tipping since I'm from the states, it seems like large scale littering? Anyhow, there isn't a public good (stopping a bad act) that can't be weaponized by certain folks (deporting the actors no matter how small the infraction), is there? Absurdity rules these days; it seems.
None. Morgan McSweeney is a master of the dark arts of political infighting. He knows zippo about governance. But Sir Keir Starmer has unshakable faith in him.
Fly tipping is a completely unjustifiable crime, that demonstrably leads to further crime, makes peoples lives worse and costs the country millions. I'm glad they want to crack down on it. It's certainly not authoritarian.
Using drones and the vast expense of towing and crushing cars (and of course we all know they're regularly going to get the wrong car) is silly. If you know who it is then fine them.
Fining doesn't work. Say it costs £100 to take something to the tip and the fine for dumping is £500, as long as you as you don't get caught 4/5 times it's worth your while.
Starmer: "We will deport foreign nationals found guilty of fly tipping"
Reform: "Why wont Labour commit to putting foreign fly tippers to death?"
Starmer: "We will execute foreign nationals found guilty of fly tipping"
Reform: "Why wont Labour commit to public executions"
Fly tipping is the practice of illegally dumping rubbish, most commonly a fridge or washing machine chucked down a back alley, although sometimes it can be on a much larger scale.
Starmer isn’t ‘left’!! My evidence: removal of WFA from pensioners, refusal to abolish 2 child benefit cap, removing PIP and AtW payments from disabled people, refusal to legalise safe immigration routes, supporting #GazaGenocide and refusal to #TaxTheRich 😡
"The left"
I do believe you Murdoch scumbags did all in their power to stop "the left".
It's your go to bogeyman when you forget it's YOUR politics that has created this shit hole Britain we reside in now.
Starmer is a neoliberal asshole
Drones will not catch either - it will be ground mounted cameras & they are already in use - it will be many more of them, monitored by AI to save manpower
Yes, I believe the police should be abolished as they are agents of capital whose purpose is to mete out random violence against the workers to keep them frightened. Clearly it’s worked on you.
Well I am only a part-timer a "worker" these days. And never been subjected to violence by the rozzers. A bit of sarcasm when they booked me....that's all
But if you class both burglars & fly-tippers as "workers" then I guess you might call being handcuffed when caught "random violence" I guess
I'd send the vehicle to Ukraine for their war effort assuming it was worth the transport. If it is "perfectly fine" but unsuitable for that then auction it....
I have no issue with non-custodial punishments that are strong enough to curb criminal behaviour that hurts ordinary law abiding people
I think proceeds of crime are normally auctioned. But "crushed" sounds more punchy in that Starmer post (which I think was misguided - the guy is tone-deaf)
Would love to see Starmer saying, "Crush it!" with clenched fist and mean expression. "And then Rupert, I'll crush you!" You know it's happening somewhere in a parallel universe.
Speaking only for my local area, the chair I have to squeeze past on my way home from the train station was definitely left there by an English person.
The Tories seem to have developed some sort of amnesia about the 14 hapless years when they run down this country and led the biggest act of self harm ever inflicted on a nation by the nation AND a ten fold rise in immigrants. What a nerve @rupertlowe.bsky.social
I'm on the left, too, and crushing people's cars does. Perhaps they should provide councils with the means to allow people to dispose of their stuff properly?
These are arguments against all criminal punishment. Are fines and imprisonment also to be banned as authoritarian? Obviously also good to make it easier to dispose of stuff but naive to think sanctions aren't part of the picture.
Comments
Also, is this dude saying they gonna blow up cars of people who do that? With drones?
Wtf is this post, have people gone completely insane?
Beyond stupid
It's ridiculous to make access harder and more expensive and NOT expect fly tipping!
Make it easy and cheap, and the service will be utilised.
It's as true for council tips as it is for Netflix!
Happens because local authorities charge to dispose of commercial waste.
It IS a problem, but tbh there are far more pressing concerns.
MAKES HEAD HURT!
I’d bring back the stocks for litterers 😆
We can live without the crap old diesels these scumbags use
Lowe is just the worst sort of racist, though, jumping on any issue to shoehorn his "send them back" agenda for his bigoted followers to become euphoric over.

Give him another year and he'd be bang on for annexing the Sudetenland
Search engines are your friend; go and look it up.
Flawless Cleaning Service if you want to see it.
Worse, it's just dickheaded posturing for the Daily Mail as who is going to pay for all this? Where's the law that would allow this?
Are they just going to follow every white fan in the area just in case it's a fly tipper?
Reform: "Why wont Labour commit to putting foreign fly tippers to death?"
Starmer: "We will execute foreign nationals found guilty of fly tipping"
Reform: "Why wont Labour commit to public executions"
Etc etc etc etc
It's awful.
I do believe you Murdoch scumbags did all in their power to stop "the left".
It's your go to bogeyman when you forget it's YOUR politics that has created this shit hole Britain we reside in now.
Starmer is a neoliberal asshole
I don't like the post - but I do support the policy and so will any impacted by these selfish bastards
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/councils-to-seize-and-crush-fly-tipping-vehicles-to-clean-up-britain
Do you object to ANPR cameras? I cannot see the difference
If you don't pay cash your entire existence is already under surveillance
Big deal
I also hate the level to which we are surveilled via bank transactions
All of these things have been used to attack people who protest and with the way things are going I don't trust them to not continue to do so
I'm not a libertarian, think we need enough checks on activity to reduce crime - put the balance in a different place from you
More important is enough monitoring of the powerful so they are not abusing such intrusion
The rich and powerful will just use the surveillance to minimise dissent against the status quo
I'm only really a libertarian on this issue, on other things like legalised drugs I want a state controlled market
Would you say the police actually doing a bit for a change to catch burglars is "authoritarianism"?
I can only assume your attitude is based on past criminal activity....or an intention to commit this selfish crime in future
It's like something out of Black Mirror
That doesn't fill me with hope either...
So maybe that builder with the unlikely low cost for rebuilding will get tracked when he disposes of waste - and caught
Good job, I say!
That really ain't "socialism", mate
But if you class both burglars & fly-tippers as "workers" then I guess you might call being handcuffed when caught "random violence" I guess
I have no issue with non-custodial punishments that are strong enough to curb criminal behaviour that hurts ordinary law abiding people
Authoritarian? Sure.
Left wing? Starmer? 🙄
Everything else is just wind & p!ss.

Not only that, but a white English person 😱
Shocking, I know!
And do you really think they will always get the right car?
