I always thought Generation X came from slogans associated with the band of that name during the punk era. I certainly saw it used in graffiti and on posters at that time.
Right, that did not come out until 1991. It may have got the term into certain social media circles, but it had been used on the 'street'; popular culture, 14 or so years before then.

Through analysis of 50,000 social media interactions and in-depth interviews with 45 participants across age groups, I demonstrate how the phrase "ok boomer" operates as a critique not of age per se, but of specific orientations toward social change, technological adaptation, and economic orthodoxy.
