That's not what happened. His book "The Age of Reason" was seen as so incendiary to most American Christians that he was reviled in the popular consciousness, so much so that over a century later even Teddy Roosevelt maligned him as a "filthy little atheist."

That is part of what happened. They used his words and betrayed his ideals. I'm not sure how the opinion of American Christians negates that reality? That there was more public pressure doesn't cancel it out.

And those people were just as wrong? The founders had no moral backbone.

Like, the exact same thing can be said of his views on equality, on slavery, and so on. The views being unpopular to bigots (which they are, no matter how normalized it was) doesn't change what fundamentally happened: he was a useful tool to those who did not remotely practice what they preached.

I did some digging and he didn't seem to think that the Revolution was a failure. He thought the US failed to take the next step: the dismantling of religious institutions, which he saw as the next great enemy after monarchy based on his work, "The Age of Reason."
