When I was a bartender, a friend said, “I can’t believe you work at that mustache bar.” And I was like “??” They asked, “Have you not ever noticed that like every guy in there has a mustache?” and I honestly I hadn’t, but after that I couldn’t unsee it. It was a great job.
Kelly’s in Nags Head, on the Outer Banks of NC. Gone now, sadly. That job brought so much good into my life. Mike Kelly was a smart, hardworking guy, built a little empire out of nothing.
It is a fascinating study of a culture of intense privilege and delusion mixed with a brutal honesty & casual cruelty bred by anonymity. I'm so so so glad it didn't exist when I was in my teens and 20s & 30s.
