what's the best grid-based, turn-based tactics game you think i probably haven't heard of?
cc @dominictarason.com you're one of the all time greats at recommendations; you got any ideas for underappreciated tactics games?

It's a mashup of Final Fantasy Tactics and Sid Meier's Pirates
Polish 1999 release, slightly horrory.
Great enemy resistance mechanics, great fighting puzzles.
The Last Spell - fantasy zombie defense game, forces you to plan out and use your few units well
Stirring Abyss - Submarine crew fighting lovecraftian monsters and slowly mutating themselves
Dungeon Deathball - 2 person football against monsters. The ball is your only weapon
Urtuk the Desolation - Low fantasy grid based combat
Ticket to Earth - Really liked the tile-matching gameplay + strategy
Shogun Showdown - Single samurai rogue-lite, shows you all the information like Into the Breach
Turn based strategy / puzzle games is my jam, some of them venture a bit into more puzzle land. But hope there is something you'll enjoy.

(slightly cheating because it's pentagons/hexes not a grid, and it's never been localized, but if you can find it you can probably intuit a lot)
from what i can suggest however it got only a shitty flaw if you use the english translation, the briefings in english are bad possibly with the voices too
The game is also extreme because its intention is to be hardcore even at the start.

Has one of the most interesting map based exploration implementations I've seen in a game and the actual tactics gameplay is sublime (ability based where you can modify the terrain).
Story and graphics are minimal but I see that as a plus tbh
TT has always been my ace card for obscure tactics game
Nice that you've already played it, though :D
Still in early access but I really like Cyber Knights: Flashpoint
And I'm currently fighting through Reverse Collapse (remake). The original, brutal Waifu Death Squad.
Max difficulty was a blast!

The rougelike STORY BASED Wildermyth is amazing too.
The tactical component is good, but not ground breaking
I'm interested in researching tactics mechanics. I've been talking about 'speed tactics' for years over on the other site, but since I'm starting to spin up our next game I'm back to thinking about tactics

Duelyst 2: combination card/board game. Free to play on steam. Worth a dabble.
West of Loathing is kind of grid-based - you use it, but don't really move around. More using it to couch their RPGing in, but might be worth a look
