I reviewed Monster Hunter Wilds, and my feelings about it are the worst thing to be on the internet: nuanced!

It's some of the most fun I've had with the series, making super smart tweaks to the formula all over - but it's also weirdly easy, never pushing me to think about my armor like past games.

really thought the inclusion of the seikret meant that hunts would need you to be way more considerate of spacing since you've got a way to constantly zip around. and there's maybe only two monsters that have massive area attacks. so it just means the others are dialed down for not that much reason.

nah you’re right. I’ve been a hardcore player since 3U and this is by far the easiest one yet.
If you’re new to Monster Hunter, the main story is a good on-ramp that won’t frustrate you.
If you’re a veteran, just beeline through til you hit high rank bc that’s still as good as ever. 🤷‍♀️

MonHun has an interesting problem since it inherently is going to get easier game to game since all the verbs are the same plus you get new ones. Not the balance has tipped even further in the Player's favor.

Interesting problem for them to solve in G rank.

I enjoyed your review! From what it sounds the game has lowered the bar of entry even further worries me that it does so at the detriment of its challenge. I don't want to coast through it, I'm hoping that it makes me think about my loadout before going on a hunt.

the only thing more consistent than rathian is weird gate keeping by fans.

but yeah MH always has to thread a weird needle of accessible to new people and challenging to anyone who played any previous gen.

I've seen this response a lot, and even addressed it in my review because it's an understandable one I saw coming, but this game's simplicity goes beyond that.

Like is "don't worry, we just have to wait for them to sell us an expansion before this full-priced game gets going" really a good defense?

If I had my way, I would take a higher difficulty but I also see the first time hunters struggle with the game and its easy to forget how much skill you gain from previous games. I cant really argue though since I havent played the full game yet obviously.

Yeah, that's all fair. I think my main point is that the longtime players shouldn't have to wait to pay for DLC to get the more challenging fights. They can make the campaign easier as long as the hardest endgame challenges are still a hurdle to overcome, and I just didn't feel like they were here.
