They were in a relationship at the time iirc which I think is part of the chemistry. Incredibly tragic movie. Cronenburg knows how to make a movie that’s on its face weird an wacky and then hits your feelings in the background.
The most memorable and powerful horror movies are usually tragic. Cronenberg clearly recognizes this. Going back at least to The Dead Zone if not even earlier, he brought the tragic element to the forefront in his films.

this is it right here. that final sequence is just so profoundly sad because it is the moment where cronenberg reminds you that these are two people who deeply love each other
That's the main reason I dread a rewatch. When I first saw it at 18, I remember thinking it was funny with a horror movie
