The decline of cover songs is just another example of media fragmentation. I remember going to the record store as a teenager and looking up "Yesterday" in a song index book. There were like 75,000 covers of that song. I don't think I could name a song from the past 30 years that has three covers.

Covers were cool in part because (like the examples you mentioned) top artists across genres reinterpreted each other's songs basically in real time. There are a ton of shitty covers but some are great and the conversation is cool even if the execution isn't always the best.
