My Harry died from the combined effort of retrieving his tie off a ceiling fan and attempting to vault an old lady in a wheel chair while trying to run out on his hotel tab.
The best advice I can give you: save often and keep several save slots back (there are a very few ways you can break the game but you can break it), but don't sweat failed checks because there's always another way to do something.
There's a ton of Sierra in its DNA, yeah, but it does some AMAZING things with ludonarrative and it's honestly incredible what they do with stat checks (both active and passive!)
I would boot up the game right now but it's sitting on a RAID I can't access because I updated my kernel without checking whether ZFS would work on the new version yet.
I did not think “has incredible emotional and intellectual insight, but will die the moment he can’t get a tie off of a ceiling fan” would be as fun as it is but this is the first glass cannon I love playing.
(There is one exception in the game, where a failed check means you will say something TRULY egregious to Kim, that I will reset if I fail because I CANNOT SAY THAT TO KIM, but that is a very common reaction.)
I love that game so much (and let me tell you, I have never seen a better portrayal of living in my brain than a high-Encyclopedia build constantly chiming in with completely useless information)

I will add that no matter how dark it gets, and it gets DARK, it is the kind of darkness that feels familiar if you've been there, and because it was made by people who have been there, it also has some incredible moments of catharsis.
YES, it just feels so fucking *real* and authentic, like this is how humans really behave when everything is on fire and it's about to get much worse but people are still people. I love it. So many people think it's bleak but I think it's powerfully inspirational!
Yeah. it’s incredibly humanizing in its depiction of mental illness. i was uncomfortably familiar with some of the despair in that game. really well done.
A friend of mine was like "I got to one particular dialog option [while you're examining the ledger] and went: oh. This game was made by someone who has also spent time inpatient, wasn't it."
I played it once. Harry found something in his pocket and died of ennui. Can't bring myself to resurrect him in that condition, can't bring myself to start over. 5 stars.
I'm a recovering alcoholic with a history of drug abuse. That game hit me like a nuclear blast and did not let up even for a second. It's a masterpiece.
