"Immigration has become a losing issue for Democrats over the past decade because elected leaders have followed progressive advocates to the left, beyond the political space available to them," Cecilia Muñoz and Frank Sharry write:

Party positions must be based on what voters want---even if we agree that voters can be persuaded to move in a more humane direction if the messaging is effective.
Sure, work on that effective messaging---but don't take positions that most reject. That's the road to irrelevancy.
Nothing is more true. Best way to turn a Dem toward Trump is plop a bunch of illegals migrants into their local schools. Sorry folks that’s just truth.
This assumes that voters vote on policies. Mostly they don't. They vote on perceptions that trigger emotions. Immigration is Republicans have been successful with fear and hatemongering. The irony is: R's aren't going to do mass deportations. R's LIKE illegals for cheap exploitable labor.
The progressives are always crying and whining about policies that most people don’t want, getting behind crackpot politicians who haven’t a hope in hell of winning, and then blaming everyone but themselves.
Oh. Wait. Ya'll pivoted to Diet Supermarket Brand Trump on immigration and then he kicked your asses so hard it's a coin toss if we get to be a Democracy again.
So this means we should accept the ludicrous policy positions of MAGA (read: neither conservative or libertarian) - which is to distort facts of the system and advocate for hyper-militarization - which would in effect not solve a thing?
Democrats did not lose their way on immigration. They consistently put up common sense immigration bills. But that’s not what many voters pay attention to. The conservative propaganda machine pumping out mis/disinformation is the problem and legacy media is complicit by constantly blaming the Dems.
I’m so tired of this bullshit argument, Biden and Obama had more deportations. Trump passed no immigration legislation under his first term. Under Biden, bi partisan bill added funding to ice, internment camps, limits to asylum seekers, and boarder monitoring/building. GOP provided no alternative.
You are totally right! I think Democrats can win by standing up for human rights. Democrats will loose trying to appeal to people who will never vote for them.
No one is getting deported. This is Trump; people are commodities. There is money to be made in private detention centers and the 13th amendment allows forced labor. You think the industrial farms will just let their workforce go?
Why? Most of the Democratic Party leadership is way more center than most of us would like. There really is no "far left." I want to see more progressive policies enacted. I do not want to see ANY Project 2025 policies enacted. Joe Biden did miraculous things during his 4 years & we need more.
That’s liberals. Progressive policies are those that both liberals and leftists agree on, so not much. For leftists there are no purity tests, there are decency tests. Bernie Sanders is a leftist and the most popular politician in the country, but he got rat fucked by the DNC, twice, so here we are.
so then you understand the democrats in power handing over power to trump without any sort of resistance whatsoever is fascism? by god we're finally getting somewhere with the liberals
well then I have to assume Munoz and Sharry are blithering fucking idiots living with their heads up their fucking assholes because in no way have elected Democrats, especially Biden & Harris, moved to the left on immigration- illegal immigration crossing were DOWN under Biden, lower than Trump
What are you talking about? I watched the DNC and the debates. I heard the words from their own mouths.
A strict, conservative border policy does not suddenly become radically progressive just because it doesn't call for the immediate deportation of tens of millions of people.
Trump killed a bipartisan border bill and you fucking dopes are blaming Dems. As much as you think the border was an issue, it wasn’t, it was all a cult of personality. Literally no one is taking about the border post election except for you guys.
I don't agree with this article either but pls know the bipartisan border bill the Dems were pushing was cruel and filled with all of the provisions Trump & Stephen Miller wanted. THAT's why he killed it - he didn't want Dems getting credit for his ideas.
it's okay, they'll babble shit about bipartisanship and then vote for it because they desperately want the approval of republicans instead of their voting base
Yes, that's true of the dem politicians. I'm referring to the liberal rabble who only come out of the woodwork to protest cruelty when the gop is doing it.
Ah, the Atlantic, the Breitbart for the literary is pushing more bigotry. Don’t forget to write about trans kids! You wouldn’t want to lose momentum in destroying lives!
Nah. We don’t lean into xenophobia and dehumanization because people are buying into fascism and hate. We should dog in deeper to helping people and treating everyone with dignity
Appalling - the Democrats, especially Biden, have long chickened out and let the Republicans frame the issue and control the agenda.
Biden did a lot of good things, but immigration is IMHO his biggest policy failure, and not keeping his successes and goals in the news his biggest strategic one.
I'm saying this as a Libertarian, from back when the Libertarian Party was radical about open borders
in addition to opposing the draft and drug laws,
before the right-wing racist takeover that started at 9/11 and has pretty much turned the party into Trumpers.
Except back in reality, the Dems deport more people then the GOP presidents that precede them, and campaign exclusively on the psychotic xenophobia that this writer wants, and still lose.
I refuse to read the propaganda piece so I need someone to tell me:
Do they mention that Democrats follow the laws and when the Republicans had a chance to toughen up the law with a bill they wrote they preferred to blame Democrats?
Or no?
Gop been running on “the border” for 2 decades and has had multiple “trifectas” (house, senate, WH) and passed ZERO LEGISLATION in over 20 years. Why? every election they MAKE MONEY off it “being broken”, They keep it broken for job security and $$$
Immigration's been a 'losing' issue for Democrats because of maga & re media lies. Because we lost THIS Election, talking heads blame Dems. The blame is on the media for allowing rw bs to DRIVE its narrative. Stories driven by polls.
Maga is only driven by hate & ignorance. That's it.
Can the media stop trying to create more division on our party?
Manchin and Sinema have been the roadblocks for any comprehensive immigration bills getting passed for years. The other problem has been ignorant voters. You can't pass shit unless you have the numbers elected.
Another BS story. The Biden administration passed a tough immigration bill that was supported by Republicans and only killed because Trump thought it would be bad for his campaign. Stop gaslighting.
"[W]hereas fascists assigned much of the blame for their countries’ economic problems to... bolsheviks, liberals, and Jews, neofascists tended to focus on non-European immigrants..."
This is completely wrong. The Dem position on immigration reform IS popular. The issue is that the amnesty loophole is not and Dems were unable to pass a bill to address it.
The thing is that most American don't actually care about the total number of people who are crossing the border. What they didn't like though was the constant news stories about Asylum seekers who got free hotels and credit cards.
Which party has bitched and moaned about border security constantly for over a decade, and when they had the chances to do something they voted against their own bills?
I swear to god I am so sick of the "do all the things you were doing but we're not giving you credit for but do them harder and eventually the Republicans will see sense and allow it" takes
Democrats didn't lose their way. Immigration is just a birdwhistle along with abortion to rile up the rights brain dead base. The Atlantic is another lying rag.
Utter bullshit. The #PutinGOP created a fake "crisis" fueled by nothing but lies, echoed by their media shills, propagandists, & MSM, then REFUSED to pass the bi-partisan bill under orders by #TheRapistTraitor so he could keep the con going about it. STRU Atlantic
The Democrats need to understand how they lost to arguably, the worst candidate in history, a convicted felon & traitor. Is this pollster right? The message I heard, & thought would win, was the Democrats sought to protect our democracy from a dictator. That lost. https://www.thirdway.org/memo/what-voters-told-democrats-in-2024

Except for that.

ZOMBIE FOURTH ESTATE MUST DIE. BOYCOTT THEM ALL.
#BOYCOTTATLANTIC
Stop blaming the left for weak ass spineless policies catering to republicans who never end up voting for you.
The progressives are always crying and whining about policies that most people don’t want, getting behind crackpot politicians who haven’t a hope in hell of winning, and then blaming everyone but themselves.
Like the Tea Party in reverse.
Oh. Wait. Ya'll pivoted to Diet Supermarket Brand Trump on immigration and then he kicked your asses so hard it's a coin toss if we get to be a Democracy again.
But I am sure everyone else is to blame...
The #Democrats have only adopted parts of the #GOP policy on immigration going back to the Clinton years.
They lost this argument because Dems have no argument.
They have abandoned immigration policy.
Racist Republicans antithetical to teachings of Jesus IN EVERY WAY, drown out Dems' humanity on immigration.
They ditched opposition to torture and the death penalty, and became fixated on immigration.
Instead of debunking those vile trans-hostile commercials, Democrats appear to be dumping support for trans human rights.
It’s not left versus right, it’s the rich versus the rest of us.

1: Does it hurt to be this wrong, or is it like, a kink?
2: How much money are you getting, & from which racists?

This will, once again, be a losing strategy.
