Well let’s see: we’ve had
• a terrorist attack
• a car explosion involving symbols of the country’s two most powerful (and transparently corrupt) men
• the number 1 team in college football get boat raced
Getting a very strong “2025 is not allowed to have nice things” vibe tbh…
It's the first day of the freedom I've finally bought for myself. Paid off student loans/house/car/credit card. "Retiring" from my day job with what I hope is enough $$ in the bank to live *very* simply, write books, hike with my dog, grow a garden, love my dude.
We took a spur-of-the-moment trip to NOLA for NYE and are staying at a boutique hotel on bourbon street. We were in bed when the stuff went down, but the vibes are bad so far, Drew. They are very bad. 🙏
I was going to comment "emotionally exhausted," but I thought that there had to be a more accurate word so I googled, got bored with it and was distracted by reddit for a good hour. I'm tired and my joints hurt too.
I did roasted potatoes a few days back, and did mashed today as my (100% Italian heritage) wife was doing PA dutch country style pork ribs and sauerkraut for the new years.
"PA Dutch" is shorthand for a particular culture of German immigrants to Pennsylvania, primarily from the Palatinate area of Germany.
In this case, brown the "country-style" pork ribs, add onion, brown sugar, and undrained sauerkraut (and a can of mild lager), and braise for 2-3 hours.
My wife grew up in Wilkes-Barre PA which has a long history of being multi-ethnic (mostly because the primary industry in the 1800s/early 1900s was coal mining).
So there are streets where you can buy homemade empanadas, kielbasi, Cornish pasties, and Lebanese food within a couple of blocks.
I pulled a muscle on my ribcage from coughing too hard (from the flu I learned today) at about 11:45 PM on New Years Eve.
Every time I cough it feels like I'm getting punched hard in the side; I'm coughing quite a bit.
I spent the morning in an ER, 4 blocks away from the goddamn Mummers Parade.
Daughter is 7 months old tomorrow and every day she does something new that is some combination of adorable and amazing. My plan is to avoid the news as much as I can and make her home a safe and happy place to grow.

Choosing between roasting or mashing potatoes.
It’s hard, Drew — asking oneself the big questions. But I’m on it.
All potato are good potato.
I went with roasted in the end.
What constitutes Dutch country-style pork ribs, may I ask?

Didn’t know there was a regional ribs. Okay, that sounds tasty. Neat.

Also, a small part of me reads this and hears your voice in to simpler times…
