I watched a lot of my first SNL on Comedy Central, which was better (1 hour, less ads) and worse (only one musical guest song, they definitely cut around things like Sinead and the pope).
Time to confess I don't think I'd ever heard (or heard of) the song Paul Simon and Sabrina Carpenter opened with. Spent the whole time being like "I think this is 'still crazy after all these years'?"
"Homeward Bound" has special resonance for SNL because one of their earliest filmed segments featured it, and later Paul Simon went on the show and performed it with George Harrison.
Still trying to process why the lyrical change of "cigarettes and magazines" to "airport lounges and magazines" happened last night. Are we not allowed to say cigarettes anymore?
Didn't help that Paul Simon sounded very much like an old man singing. And in fairness to him, he IS an old man. But he definitely sounded every bit of his 83 years.
Ah well, there’s a reason for that. Lorne was fired in 1980 and Dick Ebersol took over as EP. He cast Eddie, and the entire Billy Crystal/Martin Short cast. When Lorne was put back in charge he memoryholed the Ebersol years as best he could manage
Yup. Good recap. And, yes, memory-holed. The last time I was streaming shows, you could not even get the Eddie years. They were omitted. May be different now. Not sure.
I watched the original cast as a kid and the Eddie period were my middle school and HS years.
He treats his employees like shit, sanded down the politics of the show to toothless dogshit, cares more about getting back to the Hamptons than making the show funny, is clearly a Republican, etc etc
Comments
What I found very touching is they clearly slowed it down to account for Simon’s age
