just read a Severance fan theory so insane that if it’s true I’ll be annoyed I spoiled it for myself and if it’s false I’ll be annoyed they missed an amazing idea

This is the pitfalls of building up these worlds of expectations in our heads. It happens with movies and shows and franchises all the time. People theorize and become convinced these worlds are real then get upset when they turn out not to be
Here’s one that may or may not have been offered. The characters do have two personalities and realities - severed and unsevered - except that’s an illusion. They’re always unsevered. The real livable world is underground at Lumon and the external world is unliveable.
The season finale is that the "outies" don't actually exist and they all just sleep in pods or something and I've never even watched the show or anything on Apple Plus but did I guess right?
Well, now I have to follow you because I cannot get ny of my friends to watch this damn show. And it's so good. I am watching S1 again before watching S2 because I am sure I missed things the first time through.
Okay yes that’s a really good point - there would have to be some big side plot we don’t know with his wife and why she’s there, all of which would have to be at least 11-12 years old
My husband thinks it’s a situation where Gemma gave birth there and it’s part of why all of it is hidden from Mark and so messed up.. idk he has this whole other show in his head going on
I thought that too but Miss Huang would be too young if Gemma was pregnant when she died. Maybe she’s a niece or cousin of Gemma? We haven’t seen her outside of her on the Severed floor so we don’t know if outie Mark knows she exists.
I think Miss Huang might be a baby version of Gemma since we saw that glimpse of a file about her talking about the "build" -- Miss Casey was the last one that got scrapped, Miss Huang is the new one in progress.
I don't think it's outside the scope of series but I doubt this is the case for the main cast, maybe Irving in the past but that's a stretch, there's just not really anything pointing to it. Though there's probably other means of memory fuckery that could've been employed
It’s almost certainly true that there are ‘layers’ to being severed. They have demonstrated they can turn it on and off outside the office. The woman who had a severed childbirth is an example. The ‘real world’ is also weird and managed.
Hmmm I’d be surprised. The “shadows” in 204 were super odd but there are a lot of odd things in the series. I still think that they are reconstructing people’s mind and put them in clones. That’s why everything goes by four, like the four tempers.
They work as groups of four, there are four colors of cables for reintegration procedure. Colors that match the four boxes they use to put the numbers in when refining the macro data. Data which produces said four tempers on sight.
You’re onto something with the 4 tempers, but I think clones are very unlikely. For one, that doesn’t make sense in the context of the season one finale
I think it would explain why “she’s alive” despite the fact that he’s seen her body and that he’s working on her file specifically. :)
Also interesting, the color of the cables used on him, matches some of the colors used for brain waves, colors also shown on their badges, I think we’ve only seen 🔵🟢
I’ve only watched a few minutes of the first episode what seems like ages ago and I won’t claim credit for this theory myself but let’s just say I assumed this would be a plot point.
>computer, reading the text visible on the screen: "no spoiler tags so it's in the alt text of this picture of gromit."
>blind person: "I don't want spoilers of the show, so I will not click and trigger my computer program to read this text."
I don't think this is the case at all given the innies physical injuries occurring and carrying through and the fact O&D are very explicitly producing and shipping off physical objects
I'm not sure that's a great idea for the visually impaired people, alt text is for, as you're not describing the images AND not allowing them to opt out....
To be clear, OP does accurately describe the images of Gromet before running off on a tangent. Also, as BlueSky is primarily text driven, the pre-warning in the post that there would alt text appropriation is warning enough IMO.
I think it's just a kind of retro-futurism thing which would explain the PCs and stuff. Your theory might explain why their actual job is so weird/nonspecific
OH man, like the second the first ep of season 2 ended I was wildly speculating about everyone and everything being secretly severed and double severed. That guy? Secretly severed. Her? No idea that she’s really severed. That potted plant? Fucking severed
Stopped reading your post after the six words. Will never understand why people enjoy spoiling storylines by ready theories that may turn out to be true.
At this point
I am slowly losing interest in the story line, and just enjoying the inanity of the episode.
I gave up figuring plots out after “The Lost Paradigm”.🫢
That finale sucked. My first tweet years and years ago was to actor Aaron Douglas, who played Galen Tyrol on BSG ‘05. I lauded his performance, but criticized the final season. He responded, “Yeah, YOUR show was MUCH better.” 😂 😝 😆 ☠️
For the record, I was hoping they were going with everyone being artificial, a robotic civilization bound by programming to reenact a traumatic past conflict over and over again.
No spoiler, but it’s pretty clear technology is seriously restricted in the real (outie) world Lumon exists in, and I think they control/limit it. All the cars are 60’s-90’s, the only cell was Petey’s flip phone, all the greenscreen monitors, needing to roll a TV cart from the 80’s out to the cliff.
as a huge lost fan (keeping the fandom of 4 people alive) it drives me crazyy. like there r valid critiques of losts last few seasons but that is not one of them. the lack of media literacy scares me lol
Love that you're a severance fan.
I don't know how possible this is, given how hard it would be to explain to the average viewer, which is not something you want in a huge twist. I'm much more inclined to believe this theory about the board.
the board does say something one time. it sounded like a bored dude and he has like one line. to me it was pretty affecting- that these people with such revered power are just people

He also knows how to play the game better than the others.
And remember they are saying he’s needed to complete some project, so they need him and may not be as tough.
the theory held more water in S1 though, I don’t think it’s got much weight anymore

If that’s not the theory it should be, because I love Dark City.

2. I don't have to I work in low level corporate America
