Remain eternally angry that AT LEAST six years ago I started pitching multiple editors about a looming insurance crisis in California and was told it wasn't a real story, or if it was it would affect a small number of people, and even if then, it would be a negligible policy issue.

And renters are getting so defiant of house rules that we worried they'd burn the place, and the valley.
Yeah, you’re probably making a prudent call there.
The link between climate change and wildfires was not some fantastical claim, even 6 years ago; Mike Davis was going on about it in the late 90s
And the insurance companies aren’t doing what they do out of the goodness of their hearts
All working as intended.
It’s also the entire Gulf Coast!
We need to identify the past failures so we can address them for the future.
There is plenty of land in CA, but it is "too far away", will "cause more traffic", etc., etc. This is why remote work, and telecommuting is absolutley necessary.
People in other states - including Colorado and Texas - take note. You're likely to be next.
They track the risks and have the data to prove it.
They give a shit if you believe in climate change or not, they operate on their numbers.
Home insurance will go through the roof, coz ignorance is expensive.
In the case of LA fires they will have a hard time getting any money for their loss. It's getting to the point why buy home insurance, but you have to!
After buying, I was shocked by how few companies cover CA.

I guess it’s cheaper to just cut and run.
The reality is that insurers cannot be forced to operate in a high risk market and the government will not underwrite that level of risk.
It is down to their own commercial needs and this area is high risk!
On such a basis they decline to insure.

- Only recently has the State finally accepted this forward-looking approach, though with restrictions
- California State Insurance Department USED to lead in smart regulation
- this industry is deeply intertwined with industry and society
- California’s apparent social and economic success was not followed by a long term commitment to spread the wealth & maintain education standards

Housing is again another ticking economic disaster.
Excessive egregious amounts of wealth not being checked by responsible legislation will leave everyone 100% screwed.
So if they're stealing / embezzling / paying themselves exorbitant amounts?
Do you understand how theft and denial of service goes together?
Ignore ethical scientists at your peril.
You have got what you voted for, and....so, what you deserve.
In 2012 she wrote a thesis on the possibility of large fires in Colorado due to an abundance of trees killed by the pine beetle. They brushed it off. Same year we had the 8th largest fire in CO history nearly go into Fort Collins.
You see, cause no other state has experienced it then it’s not a problem.
We live in unprecedented, exponential times. & no one will be held accountable for such failures of sight (not even imagination).
These companies regularily handle damages reaching billions.
However, they and the primary insurer will adjust their rates to the risk, so the prices for home insurance will continue to climb.
A house to be able to survive that is called a bunker, not a home.
