Cats that are weaned too early have obnoxious oral fixations! Maybe keep your good socks in the garage? A cupboard? Cede all your socks to this creature for they clearly need them more π
Oh my goodness, I thought i was the only one with a cat that sucks on clothing π
One of mine is obsessed with particularly my pillow but will do it to anything I wear. I keep telling him he is weirdo π
Our ginger is a total menace as well. He ruins our sleep, beats up my perfect cat and makes the dog neurotic, but heβs also the funniest animal weβve ever had.
Whatβs so special about your socks? I say this bc I had a dog that ate our shoes while we were out. It dawned on me one day that we go barefoot at home and only wear shoes going out (away) She was pissy bc she had to stay home. Wearing shoes at home finally wore that habit down..
I had a foster kitten once that would suckle on my stuffed animal and it was so gross when I would pull it close and it was covered in cold cat spit ππ
The youngest menace is 6 months, chews cords, like the one to my pre-lit Christmas tree and my phone charger, and also burrows under blankets to attack feet. Try citrus spray, or essential oil on wool balls in the dryer? Unless she decides she likes that, then idk
Unfortunately, as she is orange, she is just doing what her single brain cell is telling her. And that's only if it's her turn with the cell!!! Best of luck.
Please get some baby locks for your drawers! My childhood cat did the same thing and it killed him. It took years but the fibers from the socks he was sucking on built up in his intestines and by the time he got sick it was too late. Keep your baby safe! Sheβs adorable! β€οΈπ»β€οΈ
Cats dislike citrus smells. You could get a small bottle of orange essential oil and either add it to white vinegar in the rinse cup of your washer or put it on wool balls in your dryer. Maybe sheβd leave your socks alone if they smelled wrong to her.
Every time you do the laundry, release several mice around the house to distract and divert her. (I havenβt tried this myself, but theoretically it should work.)
An old terry cloth towel or washcloth . I've had a few rescues who were separated from mom too soon and went through the same thing. It's their need to nurse that didn't get totally satisfied and something about that rough texture seems to help. Good luck!
Zero help but my sister's cat steals her socks and carries them around the house & deposits them wherever she'd like. Clean, dirty, doesn't matter. She did eventually start putting child locks on her drawer.
My dad with dementia has word finding problems and when I visit and stay with him to care for him, I bring my three cats. He wanted to know where they were in the house but couldnβt remember the word βcatβ so he asked βwhere are the three lions?β
I do not. Mine has discovered my Scrub Daddy hanging next to my kitchen sink and brings it to me in the middle of the night so she can chew on it in my company π
Also, your cat is what is known as a "wool sucker" ... doing this with sweaters, socks, &c. reminds them of suckling on their mom when they were tiny. Siamese, by any chance?
If they were dirty, maybe, based on theories about sweat compounds & metabolism, but clean? I got nothing unless it's something in the bleach/detergent/softener.
Be thankful for your horrible cat that all he does is suck on your socks. I spent $2800 on my cat this weekend for a urinary tract obstruction and 5 meds for the next 2 weeks.
Aww, i hope he feels better soon. Cats are very prone to bladder problems . Too much dry food can cause a lot of problems. I give mine about 30 % dry but only the one for urinary health. π
Paws crossed for a quick recovery! We had to switch to the urinary food. I don't love how it makes their coats feel, but there haven't been any recurrences.
Just did this with my dog in December. Plus the special food, which he actually loves, lol. We did surgery to remove the stones. Cone of shame. The whole 9. Expensive, but worth it!
1. Fold socks immediately out of dryer and put in drawer.
2. I have a bunch of clean socks that have holes worn in them...they are left in a pile by the bed as one of my boys likes to pick them up and begin meowing loudly in a specific tone as he proudly brings them downstairs to us a prize.
Bait sock! I should take the ones we've ceded to her, wash them, and strategically place them on top. I think she misses the thrill of theft with the ones she's allowed to drool on.
I'm sorry, but of all the worrying things I've read today, this is not one of them. Such wonderful and weird little creatures!! Hilarious and thank you for sharing
Fill a few socks with catnip and tie the ends off. If you must use a spray bottle with water to teach the cat which ones are play toys and which ones are not. This is how I trained my cat to stop stealing socks
Wool sucking is a sign that the cat has food insecurity. Your cat was taken away from it's mother at too young an age. Every time you see the cat wool sucking, pick the cat up and put it in front of some food or give it some sort of treat. they will slowly get "weaned" again.

Cat comfort beats all else

For the cat to use
Don't feel bad for her, she is the worst.

itβs worth a try
Wait, are your socks in the bottom drawer? Maybe move them to a different drawer?
I donβt have children.
I have four evil cats and a deranged Great Dane
Long ago, when my brotherβs gf stayed over, our do stole her underwear and put them in the yard. Every time.
Iβm deeply sorry, but the only solution is to put clean laundry in the dresser. Which is fucking bullshit.
