one of the things which makes trump uncompelling even as a villain is how petty his ambitions are. he wants to control what's on stage at the Kennedy Center and make a couple billion dollars and for that he is willing to sell the united states of america to russia.

this is a joke but i do honestly think there’s a quid pro quo here that we’re not seeing

It has to be something even he knows would bring him almost universal scorn and would likely lead to a Ceaucecu or Beria-like end.
guy fuckin loves trophies
he's selling out our national security to get the PGA to play at Doral.
But:
1) consider that no one but Russia was willing to lend him money since 1987
2) the US GOP is a craven troop of bootlickers
And then I’m not so reassured about how we can call him a second-rate villain.
Because the first-rate ones have their claws DEEP into his orange ass.
"That's it?! *That's* your motivation for inflicting your assholery on everyone?! Damn, that's pathetic."

Instead he's satisfied with being a Putin lackey like Lukashenko and turning the US into a weak vassal state like Belarus.
like Musk, a deeply broken man inflicting his insecurities on the rest of us
Sure he likes Putin, but he doesn't really care. He just gong along with it.
There a other people pushing that. And they certainly do have ambitions.
