Osibisa - Woyaya (1971). Jazzy Afro-rock with pure joy in every note.
Hugo Largo - Drum (1998). Two bassists, a violinist and the voice of Mimi Goese. Dreamlike, but not in a comfortable way.
Jawbox - For My Own Special Sweetheart (1994). J Robbins’ post-hardcore group. Tough, angular, poetic.
Peter Gabriel’s self titled 1980 album, usually identified as the melting face album.
As far as albums go, this one changed my perspective on life the most.
the album sequencing with this one right here! 😮💨 it flows seamlessly & sounds like a hot summer day/night, if that makes sense. highly suggest a spin or two 🙂↕️
Honestly if you want to hear one of the sparks of the emo revival in the 2000s
Black parade is just good. There is a story to the album, depending on who you ask. My two suggestions would be the Wendigoon order or the K Wullums order. They both tell different stories.
Wendigoon’s story is of a Cancer Patient and a psychopomp called the Parader
K Wullums believes the story is about Two gay soldiers sent off to war in 2006 and the story is the fallout of their relationship/angst that comes out when one has cancer.
If you got like an hour in your day, listen to the story being told by them in their YT video. I’d start with wendigoon. Then listen to the full album after you watch the video. That way the story is fresh in your mind. There are play lists of YT and Spotify for the Wendigoon order.
A very personal choice, an album with varied styles and atmospheres (House/Dance, Indie Rock, some Acid-Jazz and Trip-Hop vibes) from the early 2000s:
Statues by Moloko
How good are you with rap and hip-hop, bc Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers by Kendrick Lamar is an absolute RIDE. Also recommend Alligator Bites Never Heal by Doechii.
Sonically, a ride. Tight beats ranging between jazz, electro, hip hop with a bit of soft synth in there. Korean and English. Culminating in a gorgeous reflection on the Devine.
Artist: Fair to Midland
Album: Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True
Unbelievable vocal range, incredible blend of instrumentation, honestly one of my favorite albums of all time, not a single skip-track. One of the many excellent songs: https://youtu.be/IhFJvIZfB_s?si=qXDiovE18BkG8wQE
red hot chili peppers- the getaway
the weeknd- starboy
michael jackson- history: past, present, and future, book 1
pantera- the great southern trendkill
phil collins- …but seriously
The Wonder Stuff - Hup
Pop Will Eat Itself - this is the day, this is the hour, this is this
Neds Atomic Dustbin - God Fodder
Afghan Whigs - all of them
“Masked and Anonymous”, it’s the soundtrack from the movie of the same name, starring Bob Dylan. The movie was awful but the music is all Dylan songs interpreted by various artists (with a couple performed by Dylan) and it’s one of my favorite albums.
Well, there's no accounting for taste, so here's my 5 favorite albums
1: KONTAKT by EnCounter
2: Stunt by Barenaked Ladies
3: Americana by the offspring
4: Flight of The Knife by Bryan Scary (and the shredding tears)
5: Expert in a Dying Field by The Beths
A weird list now that I think about it, most of these are pop adjacent, and I don't even like most pop music, but these are just such standouts I guess
Grateful Dead “Dead Set”. Put it on, let it wash over you as you go about your activities. You will get a good feel for the many facets of the band’s music. Thanks!
I made a playlist called Fabulous Firsts. All first album’s from an artist. Dire Straits, SRV, Beatles, Satsang, Ricky Lee Jones,…and a bunch more. My favorite play list.
The Beatles - pick one but Abbey Road
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Jason Isbell - Southeastern
Tom Petty & The Heatbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes
Curtis Harding - if words were flowers
Black Pumas - Black Pumas (self-titled, not a typo)
The National - Trouble will find me
Judging by the replies, eclectic taste in music is alive and well in 2025. If you listen to half of the suggested albums you've never heard of then you'll be doing really well 🙂
My favourite live music video for your enjoyment - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94o6uIR31hk
Music shows on UK TV have always featured some of the more obscure acts which is how I discovered it in the 90's. Michael Stipe said it was the album of the year when it came out.
As an aside, I also discovered "Fuck You" by Ceelo Green in the same way, played live with an all girl band uncensored 🙂
♡♡♡♡
DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND by Bad Omens
CONCRETE JUNGLE by Bad Omens
Girlhood Memories by Phantom Siita
Ado's Utattemita Album by Ado
Robopup only has one album Disconnect, but her entire discography is 10/10
If you want more recommendations I have two cause experiencing them back to back is top tier especially since they were suppose to be their last two albums
Def. Would never presume to have a favorite B album. I more meant because of her halftime performance this week / bc of how those two albums especially flow from song to song so seamlessly.
