They are unless you….happen to have checked out a hardback copy of “The Hardy Boys” back in 1985 and never returned it. (Nor have any clues as to its whereabouts.)
Take that institution that freely gives knowledge to the masses! And to add injury to insult….I never even finished it.
Libraries existed for practical, not aesthetic reasons.
There is some truth in the belief that text as a medium is more valued by persons of high intelligence.
Nevertheless, audio and video are THE medium, and books now & forever like those juicy crumblers in 'The Time Machine'
Where I live, public libraries are not a thing. But I appreciate cafe. A mixture of people in the background, often a good view, good music, and good coffee (with the extra benefit of being able to behave more freely).
We’re gonna need them when the incoming administration dismantles the Dept of Ed and makes affordable education even more unattainable! I think those of us who are educated should volunteer in libraries and put together reading lists for those who would like to be educated. Grassroots.
I was homeless for the better part of a decade, and I can say with 100% certainty that local libraries literally save lives. From just being somewhere warm and dry to sit, to providing all sorts of helpful information and free internet access. Libraries are more than just books, they are a lifeline.
The books are very poorly paid, often trafficked from abroad and passed from person to person purely for the consumer’s pleasure. It’s an extremely exploitative environment.

Truth! When I begin working in a new town for an entrepreneurship-led economic development project, I visit the local library first. They are the unsung hero’s of the startup ecosystem.
My mom was a librarian and I often went with her. I wish I'd read more in the midst of those worlds waiting on the pages. (Usually I just played in the hard to reach spaces)
Posts like this are why I regret listing "books" as an interest when I signed up. The entire book community here is in danger of being tedious. I say this as an author & bookseller.
Just constantly seeing posts saying "I love books. Support bookstores/libraries" is getting really old, really fast.
Absolutely agree! Libraries are not just buildings filled with books—they’re gateways to knowledge, imagination, and endless possibilities. There’s nothing quite like the serenity of being surrounded by stories and wisdom from every corner of the world.

Nonfiction: Every single book with a conservative talking head on the cover.
Fiction: Recent? I'm not that caught up, tbh. But every time Danielle Steele puts out a book I do feel physically ill.
Currently reading "Rosemary's Baby". Love the film. Liking the book.
