Thanks to another comment in this thread, today I learned that setting exists after more than a year using this platform. I've just been raw-dogging it, apparently, and deleting & reposting when I occasionally forget. That setting should be on by default.

Or just delete the post and post it again with the alt text...

If you are on Android, you can use Google keyboard and enable the copy paste tool to copy all the stuff before deleting and just post it again.
