While this is happening, highly competitive students and their highly competitive parents are climbing over each other to get into these schools. That's the factor to work this issue into schools' attention. Scholarship and academic freedom don't seem to have leverage, go after the brand.

Historically, when faced with a threat to funding, universities have been quick to abandon their core principles

Only need to look back to example of Title IX in 2010s; schools were quick to abandon traditional due process in order to create appearance of cracking down on campus sexual assault
