I love that book. It reminded me of the Afghanistan I travelled across in 1974.
Actually the two kids reminded me ALOT of a great couple of young guys I met in Kabul.
I read that one and another of his, βA Thousand Splendid Sunsβ. I loaned it to a friend and when she finished it, she said by the end she hated men.
Have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns then . . . . . . . . . a beautiful story of two women over quite a long period in Afghanistan under different regimes . . . . that got me and I`m an 86 y.o. male fart!!!!
That one was sent to us as the pre-freshman summer reading by my university. I finished it within a couple weeks, and it has stuck with me since. Itβs been 19 years.
Buckle up it only gets worse- the book is absolutely incredible but I was def walking around in just the most emotionally drained fugue state for at least a week and a half after reading, totally brutal literary hangover
Read this book for the first time when I was 12 years old and it completely changed how I viewed the world. To this day is my favorite book of all time.
If you are responding to this book, try his novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns. Read the entire book, which will culminate in the most tear-inducing, beautiful ending paragraph ever.
One more you might love as well: βA thousand splendid sunsβ. Couldnβt stop reading, but tears got in the way so oftenβ¦ how on earth should women be treated like this by any manβ¦
Yes ma'am not a vacation book at all. Read the book and then watched the movie. Hassan's character haunted me. Smoked a lot for weeks in despair and strangely also felt good about the world.
That book and A Thousand Splendid Suns are two of my favorites. But definitely not chill/fun vacation books. A Thousand Splendid Suns had me crying by the end of the first chapter iirc.
Toni Morrison's "Beloved" broke me & this did the same.
a true in-the-gut overwhelming remorse that some of us can torture the beauty in the world, reduce it to rubble... then find real power as these writers' work help us to hold onto what's good so it's never destroyed... just redeployed
Me too. One time my ex mentioned a trip we took to the flea market, but it wasnβt our trip it was in Kite Runner. We had Never discussed the book, but both felt every paragraph so deeply.
I read this in high school and it struck deep! π After this, you should definitely read his second one "A Thousand Splendid Suns." From a woman's perspective in that time and setting. I'll never forget that book.
I read this a few years back and it broke me too. I remember it vividly. Such a great book but also, Iβm too chicken shit to deal with that kind of raw truth telling.
Excellent book! You will shed more tears, become further enlightened, and will be even more understanding of others we do not know. A life changing read.
try A Thousand Splendid Suns next. it's next level. i read it years ago and can still remember how i felt when i finished it because it was so visceral.
Sameβ¦. I loved both books but felt A Thousand Splendid Suns was better. Of course I read it before the major assault on women was full swing in our country, and remember feeling so secure in my freedoms as a woman in the United States. Who knew what was to come.
A Thousand Splendid Suns is a wonderful book by the same author. Read both and both have left deep impression on me. A similar book is the
Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang.
I read this book when it first came out⦠yes⦠it broke me too. Read A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. It will continue your brokenness but it will peak your resolve to be an even better human. Your political resistance will grow stronger.
Such an incredible book. A Thousand Splendid Suns is even better, quite possibly my all-time favorite book, but both of them will absolutely break you.
yeah I guess there's the kind of difficult I was expecting (situational) and then the kind of difficult that took me completely off guard (character development)
When you COME BACK from vacay you gotta pick up A Thousand Splendid Suns.
Itβs in my top 3 favourite books.
I can still taste the dust of Afghanistan in my mouth.

Kite Runner is a beautifully written book, heart rending and powerful.
AFB is the same, but no whimsy about it at all.
it's real good tho keep going
It sadly brought some of my childhood memories back.
This is a must-read book.
They are so afraid we will become too "woke". Too late!

But yeah, maybe not on vacation....
Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang.
fuzzy vacation read.
Itβs in my top 3 favourite books.
