A long time ago my friends and I had a party where we drank and smoked cigarettes and bet on all CPU smash brother fights while throwing one dollar bills on the ground. that to me is more important than “hard ware”

It's a poor replacement for having your own people around, but there are actually Twitch streams that let you bet fake money on CPU matches in games.
Saltybet (has its own website) for MUGEN (open-source fighting game) and FFTBattleground for modded Final Fantasy Tactics.
