I just got an invite for here finally but I'm just so annoyed about it all, especially as someone that never really posted to twitter or cared much about having followers. I used it as kind of an RSS feeder that I could also comment about if I so chose. But most I follow have splintered and left.

It makes me incredibly sad, given how important the bird site was to all of us for so long, for good positive reasons. That a megalomaniacal billionaire can so quickly blow it up is such a bummer. I keep holding out hope he’ll give up at some point and sell but X just makes it feel final. 😔

Seeing the X broke the last thread holding me there. I downloaded my data and deactivated my account literally seconds after I saw it for the first time. What I loved about Twitter is gone for good from that site. I'm hoping it can be recreated here.

They don't actually let you delete your account. When I tried, they said they would deactivate it for 30 days, then I could delete. Which should be illegal.

I don't want to delete my account, because I don't want anyone else having access to the name, and also because it still has value for career news/announcements for the time being. But yes. If you want to go, you should be able to go, right then.

AFAIK, mandating a super short timeframe for user data deletion would be extremely challenging from technical perspective. Even adopting to GDPR requirements was a tremendous effort for companies with a lot of data.

Kinda felt the same way when Apollo - the iOS client for Reddit that got the brunt of abuse from Reddit corp during the third party app culling - got updated to have a halo on top of its mascot's head...
