With my cat it's always 3, the one with the hair ball, the one with whatever the hell else was in there & then a little one, like quarter sized and always at least 10 feet away from the other two.

Yeah, when our cat was on crate rest following an accident, the dog had to be removed from the room whenever we had to clean the cat's litter tray. Golden retrievers regard fresh cat turd as a fine delicacy!
