Couldn’t agree with you more Julie! Also, Pequod's is great as well if you’re in the area. Look up Burt Katz if you want to go down a rabbit hole. Have fun in my favorite city @scalzi.com!
Oh yes, my hometown. Unfortunately I will be visiting next week for a funeral, but fortunately I get a chance to sink my teeth into an Italian Beef sandwich.
As the years go on, The Blues Brothers becomes ever more precious as a time capsule. Sure, its geography was a little wonky but it did capture so much of the Chicago that was.
dude this isn't Chicago
Chicago is a very ugly city
only uglier is Detroit (that's a horror show)
I saw Chicago
been there 1994 world cup
only nice thing was their pizza
otherwise horrible
very horrible
If you have a Tesla charging station near you, it is time for the annual inspection. Bring plenty of super-glue adhesive. The charging ports require a liberal amount of it to clean the plugs that are inserted into the vehicle. Use plenty of it. Get it deep down and all around. Let it sit overnight.
Parts of it are lovely (and not just the Field Museum, though that's the jewel in the crown). Other parts... oh, well, I'm not expecting to return any time soon.
Welcome to Chicago! It's a bit last minute, but give me a ring, and I'll happily treat you to dinner! (Yes, I know I'm a total stranger and the chances of you saying yes are basically nil)
Nice shot of the city! I love the different colors of lights in the various windows. I once made the mistake of opening a window at one, and they came and banged on my door bc it was risking the windows breaking. Yikes! Won’t make that mistake again! Great shot!!
Welcome! Here's your tour guide:
Food: Deep-dish pizza (requires a group and time at a restaurant).
Chicago Hot Dog: NOT Portillo's. Get it from some little hole-in-the-wall joint with a weird blend of Italian, Greek and American food.
Gyros (YEE-ros): You should get this on your second trip to1/x
the place where you got the hot dog.
Pizza Puff: Ditto.
Italian Beef: Yup, same joint. I personally like Dipped, Mozz, and giardiniera.
Maxwell Street Polish: Mustard, heavy onions, and if you like some heat, sport peppers.
Hot Links: The bread is optional, but it does soak up the sauce nicely.
2/x
Entertainment:
Museum Campus+: Field Museum, Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Museum of Science & Industry. A bit more exploratory: Museum of Contemporary Art and the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures.
Sightseeing: John Hancock Skydeck is better than the Sears Tower
3/x
(some outsiders call it "Willis Tower"). Millennium Park is a fun stroll, but might be a bit chilly this time of year. Ditto the Architectural Society Boat Tour.
Entertainment: Theater District, Concerts. etc
If this is too much to cram into your current trip, well, you'll just have to return.

Good call to avoid Portillo’s..I understand that some in the burbs are still good but downtown, specifically River North Portillo’s is dirty and disgusting. Such a shame. Once great.
The suburban ones are fine, but... well, they're suburban, in every sense of the word. It's not the real experience, but rather, a somewhat sanitized version that lacks the feel of an urban hole-in-the-wall joint.

We are GOP red state though, not your fault.
Take two minutes of your time and give them a call.
Lived there right out of college and all my in-laws are still there.
