This is very similar to being a lawyer, but the versions are saved as: 2024.11.16 Response to MTC Final Draft 4:25.pm, then: 2024.11.16 Response to MTC Final Draft 9:40.pm USE THIS ONE, and then: 2024.11.17 Response to MTC Final Draft 11:37 am, IGNORE ALL EARLIER DRAFTS, etc.
The thing I hate about myself more than anything else is having a file with 20 artboards and then Final2, Final3, Final-red-dot, Final2-red-dot-doubled, and so on. So now I have 10 trillion versions of this stupid graphic they said they wouldn't be picky on.
Same way with me and spreadsheets. I have dates. Then final. Final v2, final updated with a date. I don't trust MS's versioning. Google sheets versions amazing but the product itself is lacking a bit
Same here. I live in Excel, do all the XLSX things, and just as I'm about to push out the data and its associated PPTX, I'll get a message to check something not in scope and then it's freakin' Groundhog Day and suddenly I have seven different versions for seven different audiences.
Or a smart designer with 'xxxyyzz_filename' in which xxxyyzz is the international date standard. On occasion adding .aabb if you need a time with it. You can sort (ascending AND descending) by name. And once you're done with it you add an !! at the start and it's always listed first.
I make a copy of the file, prepend YYMMDD - to file name, and the move it to the _archive directory in project folder. That way the most recent is on top, and I have versioned history sorted in chronological order. Well, I do this when git isn’t a good fit.
I've Always been curious, why is there no Version Control for Photoshop? As a software developer I would be lost without change tracking and rollbacks, commit comments, and branches. I'm guessing GIT and SVN aren't really setup to work with those files, but it surprises me there isn't an option.
Only because the client keeps changing their mind - 😂
Handy tip: never, ever call a file FINAL only because your work is never done. Instead call it release or r.## then it fits better into the business workflow.
I once had an FBX that I imported in to blender to rig up and accidentally saved the default file as something like "CharacterWBones.FBX" and after rigging it up (and having a few drinks while working) saved the new FBX as "CharacterOhWaitNoThisIsTheOneWithBones.FBX"
Can confirm.
I used to work for engineers and I saved every iteration of every design they had me draw. They thought I was crazy until one day someone called me and said you wouldn’t by chance have any copies of the old designs like versions eight and nine?

I would name files just like that… training courseware was always being edited and revised…
Said the person who saves multiple Word drafts....

Actually, that's the solution to everyone's problem here right now.
A git repo.
