Whew. Massively overslept because I was having the most interesting dream that I was a detective trying to catch a serial killer who only killed vampires and the other vampires were absolutely freaked out.

I am actually writing a book with a similar premise, except the murder victim is still here because he's a newly turned vampire and corpses drained of blood in a specific really strange way keep showing up all over the city, so it's got to be a vampire. Or a group of vampires. The DI is very freaked
I was not a vampire and nobody knew if the killer was a vampire or a human, so everyone was paranoid and the only person working with me was an Eastern European vampire straight outta “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” who my ex-husband (who was in the dream for some reason) did not want me hanging around with
Beartongue's reaction to learning about vampires would probably not lead in a direction allowing for traditional vampire stories.
I liked Charles Stross' way of stopping blood donations from wholesome-ing his downer world - the blood sets up a sympathetic link draining life force from live victims
One thing that has bugged me for a bit is that they never tried drinking the blood of livestock — they tried getting blood from butchers, but those animals would already have been dead. Blood of *live* cows or horses ought to be inferior to human but better than nothing.
Or watch it... Who shall we cast? Anthony Head is the obvious vampire killer... Guest stars for the vampires, a new one killed each week. Is the detective Miss Marple-ish or smart and professional?
She dressed fairly nicely for an elderly woman in the books but everyone is absolutely going to take an elderly woman who makes spot on psychological observations based on behaviour she’s seen in other people in lower stakes situations as rambling and bumbling because elderly women
I imagine it’d go a bit like Terry Pratchett’s CARPE JUGULUM, where a vampire trying to bite Granny Weatherwax fails to turn her and instead ends up turned Weatherwaxed, because as a (very powerful) witch her will is stronger. Except instead of wanting a nice cup of tea it’s birds and ADHD.
Somewhere @kbspangler.com & @alepresser.com are workshopping this premise for a future limited webcomic series. Seeing if they can secure movie rights from Netflix.
I ... may have written that book? (Or at least it's a major sub-plot in one of mine!) Vampire hunters are terrifying: they're serial killers who prey on serial killers ...
Between this and the Hambly book, and maybe Tanya Huff's? Well, the field for Vampire-Oriented detective fiction seems like a perfectly good one to break into.
You haven’t read Barbara Hambly?‽‽! OMG. She is AMAZING. I can’t recommend Dragonsbane enough. Those Who Hunt the Night and sequels, ditto. Brilliant writer and a historian.
Yeah, Barbara Hambly, probably her best book. The sequels aren't quite as good but a nice series overall. And of course, there's also Blade II. But a Kingfisher version would be great fun.
From a forum post I wrote in 2016: I dreamed a vampire detective was after me. We were working a case, or I thought so... until I reviewed her notes on a suspect, & found notes about me instead. She was only pretending to be on the same side, and now I was going to pay for being so gullible.
Last night, I dreamt I was a vampire in a room with no doors, but mirrors everywhere and exactly one window. I could break the window if I could figure out which one was the window, but I didn't want to break the mirrors because, well you know, 7 years back luck and all that.

(Googles... Looks like "Immortal Blood" or "Those who hunt the night")

birds come back I have several questions
Ursula, that is a good dream, no wonder you didn't want to wake up.
Look
(😉)
My take away from the dream is that SFO does not have waterslides, but maybe it should.
