There’s a website I frequently use called “Where’s The Jump?” that tells you exactly where in a film a jump scare comes in and I just think the person who takes the time to do that is so nice

I watched jaws for the first time and my fiancée told me I HAD to look at the screen because it was crucial to the plot, just before the dead body jump scare in the boat :(
This post made me laugh. I hate being scared also (6’4”, 250, and I NEVER go to haunted houses because I don’t want to smash a scare actor in my over-the-top reaction).
But after thinking about it, isn’t this a bit like reading the last chapter of a book first? Where is the fun?
Any horror film that uses this tactic has a weak plot (or weakened the original book plot). You just can't do it in a book because the 🎵chord hit isn't available to make it work.
Can we have an "Explain A Joke" or "Ruin The Fun" website.
I literally jumped at my own shadow the other night. As I passed a single streetlight,on an empty street,my shadow overtook me.
Proper laughed at myself for jumping though.
BlueSky proposed a "Spider Shield" which people can use if they want to exclude spiders, just spiders, from their nature photography feeds. Dunno if someone will make it happen, but if so, that would be fetch!
I'm glad for this. I'm a naturally flinchy person, so, for me, jump scares are the cheapest form of horror and it annoys me more than scares me. Also, there's a site called "Does the dog die?" for the pet lovers out there.
That's an amazing idea! Jump scares can be a bit much for me, so at least knowing where they are to prepare for them or skip over helps a lot. Thanks for bringing this up!
No matter how many times I watch The Dark Crystal I jump when the little fur ball comes out of the wall. I know it's going to happen, the little thing is not scary, but rather cute, but I still jump every time. So knowing is not always helpful.
How about flashing strobe lights and loud bangs? I almost had to walk out of the Beetlejuice broadway show it was so hard to take. Sat through much of it with my hand over my eyes.
That’s some next-level public service! Speaking of helpful, if you ever need a website as brilliant as 'Where’s The Jump?' (but less heart-stopping), we’ve got you covered.
I used to have an app called Run Pee. That would tell you when there was a lull in a movie so you could go and not miss anything. It also gave you a summary of what you miss.
Another good one is DoesTheDogDie that lets you know if a film contains upsetting elements like animals dying on screen or characters getting abandoned
I used to jump at Scoobie Doobie Do and Johnny Quest. The Electricity Monster episode - was watching with all of the basement light on, blew a fuse - have never run up two short flights of yellow shag carpeting so fast in my life. https://dai.ly/x8j53ug
I hadn’t heard of that. Thanks! Here’s another one you might also like Does The Dog Die. I much prefer to know what’s coming, so I can prepare myself or opt not to watch at all.
Came here to add this - I use this site for EVERYTHING and it’s saved me trauma so many times to know when I need to skip an episode, be prepared for a timestamp, or refrain from something entirely. I appreciate that they branched out for all kinds of triggering things.
Jump scares dont make a horror movie anyhow. Sure, I dont mind them, I have s thick skin. But I know they get overused as well. It gets tiring. The best horror movies can tell a good story, with or without jumpscares.
This shopping spree is still stupid and it shows that no one is paying attention to the news. I’m saving instead of spending because it’s going to be a hard life the next 4 at least.
Why? It ruins it for you. Don't you go to films like that to be jolted out of your present reality? That's the fun! Like an amusement park ride. You love when it makes you scream!
I NEED something like this … I’d love to finish Game of Thrones but got tired of jumping up , running to other end of house, blocking my ears and singing
“La La La” to block the sounds.
😞
That IS nice. And obviously useful to a subset of the public.
Is there also one to warn me when I'm watching something totally NOT horror-related, say a comedy on HBO or football game on broadcast TV, and an ad for a movie or show pops up a gory knife wielding zombie or a disturbing psycho thriller?
Something about jumpscares triggers panic attacks and can cause me to lose sleep. I will avoid horror movies for this reason despite being able to handle a lot of gore.
I used to have the RunPee app, which tells you at what time in the movie there’s time for you to dash for the restroom (srsly). But I live and die by Netflix now and seldom go to movie theaters.
It also tells you if there are any additional scenes during/after the credits.

I disagree, it's allowing more people to enjoy horror. Besides, jump scares aren't even the best part of horror. Going "boo" might make me jump but I won't enjoy the movie more.
It's like salt. A little goes a long way, but cheap meals often rely on salt to make the food taste good.
Does the dog die? also has an app! You can select which triggers, and it will warn you about them first. I use it to check for infant or child loss in movies.
Don't think it will help me. I know precisely where the jump bits come in Jaws and Alien and I still do! But it's good to know someone has taken the time.
I would be lying if I said this didn't bring a tear to my eye. I suppose in my many years there is much to reminisce on, but despite its recency there is something comforting about this image.
Strange how that works, that a horror game could make me feel at ease.
A member of my household makes good use of it. It's a fantastic tool for people who are sensitive to that kind of thing, both for knowing where the jump scares are and for deciding whether or not to watch something in the first place.
Yeah but what's the point? It's like lining up for a roller coaster and saying ...okay, make sure this doesn't make my heart race or give me butterflies in my tummy
Reality jump scares me. Movies don't usually. Specially the more fake stuff they put in. When a monster threatens me through screen I remember I live in capitalism hell. Now... Real stories scare me, because that shit can actually happen.
Still I like horror. Sometimes I think people within are stupid or there's an interesting premise behind the jump scares and stuff. I used to get scared when I was younger, but, nah, mate. Scary is cancer. Scary is a banker, he is a real monster. A billionaire.
There is another one called "Does The Dog Die?" that hosts a series of others like, "Does the car crash?" or other triggers for people and I appreciate that one a lot too.
I don't watch horror, but it does look like it has quite a few non-horror titles that I've avoided. This is fantastic for people with severe anxiety/cptsd.
😆 That’s a fixation.
(Back in the day I worked in sound effects. I always jumped, even after seeing a scene countless times. At screenings they always sat me somewhere in front of the producers.
99% of jumpscares are 100% predictable without a website. This is the case for 98% of modern horror films. Take that from a data fish. The remaining 2% are not horror.

To any gamer out there, Neva is on the list.

they are pretty weird tho

As well as the ridiculous, almost constant vocalization of horses which is such BS.
Like kookaburra calls in a film set in Africa or the Americas 🙄

It may even may it worse, due to anticipation of the event.
Wow
If they have one called "Does the Cat Die / Get Hurt For Comedic Reasons", I'll gladly bookmark it! 😂
“La La La” to block the sounds.

I can see how that would minimize the effects of jump scares.
Great app!

Useless info I want to share before the world ends which feels a little itchy these days lol

Let's make it non horror cause it might be spooky to some people
