Our understanding of global politics has been poisoned by some bullshit think tanks which were all funded by heirs of some bastard energy tycoon somewhere.
China has been cultivating relationships with other countries for decades by playing the long game. Trump wants to go in and break things while demanding they do what he says.
The idiots in trump's team are oblivious about the BRICS trade block.
Now that Canada is brokering, trade deals with every Country trump has pissed off, USA is irrelevant! Enjoy not being able to buy eggs!
Trump imposes tariffs on most countries and is surprised that they respond differently. China and Canada both respond "fuck you", the UK is more measured because it wants a trade deal, the EU promises a response, but in its own time, and so on.
Diversity matters, but it's a taboo topic in the US.
Ah yes. I love my country, don’t get me wrong. Bust for some reason we often think if we don’t do the thing, every other thing will fall apart. Which is fucking dumb. We are all replaceable, including as the world powerhouse.
If China loses out on trade with America, it can easily just retool its production facilities for trade goods other countries would want to buy from them instead.
In the meantime, America would lose its source for goods that China would no longer even bothering to produce for them.
Curly bob thinks she is being a hard-hitting journalist when she just comes across as a bully who doesn’t listen to the person who is talking. Looking for glory when in reality she comes across as a hack. Just awful.
Trump himself pointed out that China has a 100 year plan. He's so stupid and blinded by his own arrogance and narcissism that he doesn't get his own point. He's a pimple on the hairy backside of time.
My bet is eventually Trump will reverse, but claim "He struck a great and fair deal with China" (No deal was reached), so he can make his cultists believe he actually did something. Maybe he'll call it a 5 year plan, or something stupid so people don't question absolutely nothing happening.
He's already reversing. Phones and computers have been carved out of the punitive tariffs because the USA can't stand the heat in the kitchen they set on fire. (And the world is continuing exiting us assets).
Trump is a gift to China. Dedollarisation is boosting China and EU. Losing the global reserve status for the dollar is a massive blow to USA. The petrodollar free lunch is well and truly over for Americans. Incredible, grevious mistake really.
That has always been my experience with the Chinese…Americans got flustered trying to close deals in days, Chinese would look at them and basically say…we don’t like this deal, come back to us in a hundred years or so…no rush
This is what I don't understand. I've heard from enough Americans that seem to think the rest of the world just can't trade with each other. Without them.
My country just signed deals with Brazil, Austria, Japan; we're talking to Norway, Denmark, Germany. There's 131 other partners waiting for us.
Especially when there are products and resources that other countries just don't want from the US due to quality standards, and the way this US gov is dismantling regulations, those quality standards are only going to get worse.
As an American, I can not stress to you enough how incredibly egocentric the U.S. is. In our own media, you'd think it's just the U.S. and a bunch of backwater places. Just powerfully full of ourselves, as a group.
I always thought we would eventually have some kind of rivalry with China like we'd had with the Soviet Union, but I had hoped that integrating trade with them would prevent the worst of it.
In any case, I had NOT expected the worst threat to come from within.
Trump is going to punish all those countries!!!
They are all going to get MORE TARRIFS!!
The leaders are going to parade into the Whites-only House, and beg and kiss his ass, live on TV!
You'll see! The Art of The Deal!
All China has to do is dump their US dollar and bond holdings to destroy the USA financially. That's it. And they can do this. Trump is an idiot if he thinks the US holds all the cards. And this is just step 1. Step 2: Replace the US$ with the Chinese Yuan as the world's reserve currency.
China has little interest in substituting a world reserve currency system. The concept of BRICS proposes a system of trade which uses something like what Keynes proposed at Bretton Woods in '44. A single nation should never have reserve currency power.
That gives us the citizens a golden reason to either pressure all of Congress, especially Republicans to impeach and remove him. If not it gives us a golden excuse to remove by other means. Citizen arrest and the like.
Which is easier to do when other Asian countries like South Korea and Japan come to the table. Good thing those countries hate each other and - wait, what's this? They are in talks? Oh my
China has been trying to get the rest of the world on its side for the past decade with stuff like the Belt and Road Initiative, which in a lot of ways failed
I think a lot of smaller developing countries just aren't in the mood/want to avoid big bullies controlling them
China is working with smaller asia/pacific nations and providing help with infrastructure and security/police training already. Trump is an ignorant and bombastic fool. The Chinese are considered, calm, and here for the long game. They will seize these gifted opportunities!
China doesn't want to cause a global financial crisis if it can be avoided. Thankfully they are not impulsive children like the American administration.
I truly wish my fellow American citizens would worry more about being dominated by an AI-enabled authoritarian global superpower than the remote possibility that RuPaul might sing the national anthem at a July 4th celebration, but alas . . .
I'm in the rest of the world, we do not need to pretend as if America is the indispensable nation, it never was and it never could be, as much as people tried to convince themselves of it.
fun bit of trivia for you. you know the Chinese Belt and Road program we've been making scary noises about? it is a national defense project in the best possible way.
they provide the US with cheap manufacturing. if America wants to attack them, they'll need to replace that manufacturing. and so:
china is on a tour of building roads, and harbors, and hospitals, and all manner of infrastructure in developing countries. to raise the standard of living there. and so raise the cost of manufacturing things there.
making the world a better place, as a matter of self-defense against the US.
They've got serious issues. But they did bring 800 million people out of serious poverty in the last 45 years. No other organisation in history ever came close to reducing so much human suffering.
China has the world's largest consumer population, standing army, & workforce. Asia & the Middle East are at China's doorstep. Where are Ivanka's Made in China voting machines? #GOP is trying to distract us with a straw dog trade war. #Ivanka #China #SuezCanal #Africa #BRI #distraction #Seas #Beware
It's true. China would be a part of the japanese empire if it weren't for the US. Following liberation the communists formed a new country. So if we're gonna dick measure over whose country is older then the US is.
The relationship isn't nearly so close, but it would have been interesting if the US copied France and sent them a commemorative statue. (Would it have ended up in Taiwan?)
I'm sure a lot of people can guess, but the 5,000 year thing is pure propaganda, on the level of claiming that the European Union is thousands of years old.
The landmass is not the ethnicities is not the modern political identity.
The point is that "Europe" has a history full of fractures, civil wars, external invasions, and countries that don't exist anymore. Claiming an unbroken line is nuts. Same with "China".
Not a big fan of Chinese government either. I lived in china for a few years and I am very convinced that most Chinese would be ready to fight that battle while people here don’t even want to boycott Amazon because it is going to be very « inconvenient »…
And China did it without enslaving people from another nation, denying their citizenship rights for decades, and now trying to erase their history from government documents.
You don't really expect uninterrupted continuity of administration for 2000+ years, do you? He's clearly not speaking specifically about the PRC either, but about Chinese civilization in general. You're not really having that much trouble following the conversation, are you?
The problem is that I don't like the Chinese position.
But in this case they sound like the good ones, when compared to Trump.
If I see it this way, so does a majority of the rest of the world outside of US borders.
Look at him. He knows he's fine. America is isolated from Europe. Without trade, it will crumble. The world can survive without America, but America can not survive without the world.
Exactly. The Yanks have spent the last 130 years bullying Countries into taking their products & dropping tariffs! They used their WWII lendlease debts to achieve much of it.
The collapse in tesla sales is indicative of how bad Yank exports are going to get!
China is a master at playing the long game. And we are swan-diving straight into their lap.
And while I disagree with a lot of China's politics and abuses...to insult their intelligence is beyond a rookie mistake. 47 has no idea who he's up against.
I don't like saying this at all, but small (and Large) companies in this country need goods from China a lot more than China needs goods from us and, the U.S. is not the only country that China can do business with. The lima bean farmers from tRumps last time should tell you how incompetent he is.
Population of USA—340 million. Rest of the world—8 billion. China and India could each lose 1 billion people, and they would still be the world's two most populous countries.
It took a world war for the US to get into the position where it could dictate a world order based around the US guaranteeing free trade at the cost of the Dollar being the world default currency. Trump is throwing that all away.
I love this guy! He doesn't bat an eyelash when the interviewer brings up the loss of 15 percent of China's exports. He says they're prepared for this for another 5000 years.
He makes good points. He can speak in complete and complex sentences. Unlike our prez whose language skills are at the level between a first and second grader, maybe lower. Remember, language is related to cognition.
After the Trump regime is deposed of, ideally Trump voters lose their right to vote, carry arms, cross state lines and all positions of power and management. For life.
The USA can't even produce enough baby formula! They had to do special deals with Australia to get millions of tonnes shipped in. All that formula is now 10% more expensive. It was already expensive. How much of an effect is that going to have on family budgets?
"I allowed myself to be bullied because I was scared and didn't know how to defend myself. I was bullied until I prevented a new student from being bullied. By standing up for him, I learned to stand up for myself." Jackie Chan
No, YOUR take is stupid and misinformed. It’s a valid and very effective journalistic technique to “play” both sides of an argument so that the interviewee is encouraged to cut straight to their point and unveil their true perspectives. I’m guessing you’re American?
She asked a question. There was no statement of fact from the interviewer other than to say China would lose 15% of its export market in a worst-case trade war (fact). Everything else she posed as a question. I think UK journalism might be a little beyond your capability.
It's not a take. Good UK journalists provide robust challenge to all sides of an argument. She used provocative questioning and got to the very heart of the issue for China: 'we don't care' - total resistance, no loss of standing. Quite the admission for a diplomat.
.This interview is clearly more about creating characterization, so they sought this response. Shrewd, this presents a China that is standing tall as a nation, not just the relatively new CCP. American nationalist meets Chinese Nationalist, with their own long history. That’s the story.
Really? Is she not just putting a provocative point of view because that’s a standard tool in the journalist’s toolbox? In fact, she’s providing the very prompt that invites her interviewee to make his point clearly.
Ooftah, I get it, but the irony of saying any "Royal" with a communistic country, and yet it still kinda feels that way... its hilarious how life works sometimes.
China isn’t stupid. They will go through 3rd world countries to export to US to evade tariffs. Unlike the US, China saw the writing on the wall and has been preparing.
In my sewing groups there was talking about getting stuff from China through Canadian small businesses because the shipping would be cheaper than US tariffs direct from China and someone pointed out that US customs requires a country of origin on items shipped here so not sure it would work.
Heard this in conversation with a student from Xi'an when I was taking Chinese Civ. Not this exact idea or tone, but that his grandparents had a rock-solid sense that half their population could be wiped out and they'd still endure as a nation. I've thought about that several times this week.
Poking the China bear is the biggest economic mistake in the history of this country. He enjoys pissing contests, but he chose the wrong competitor in China. Compared to Xi, the despot is a babe in the woods. His strongman, bully attitude, will cause an economic collapse of Armageddon proportions.
So the idea that the US ( pop~333 million, territory occupied~250 years) wants to start lobbing spit wads at China ( pop~ 1.4 billion, age > 5000 years) expecting that somehow this would come out in our favor is just pure, well, Trump.
she looks like she ate a whole lemon, getting told "lol no" in front of an audience like that. i think American exceptionalism is dying in front of our eyes.
You go China! I hate seeing anyone capitulate to such a little man. I can’t understand why anyone does. He literally has no power beyond that which others give him. He’s a con man and a cheat, a one time game show host. I don’t get why people give him so much power. It’s a bizarre phenomenon.
China has been through harder, dynasty-ending tribulations than a stupid trade war. This wont even be a blip on the history of this literal 5000 year old empire
Chinese imperial history should be a lesson to the US leadership, but US leadership is incapable of taking advice. China doesn't want a collapse but will have no problem saying I told you so.
Canada isn’t in the same league as china with its history etc but we feel the same. We don’t need them. We will make new alliances and be more independent. It will hurt at the start but we’ll figure it out.
Japan has a trillion and China has about 950 billion. They are the biggest foreign holders. Those are the ones to be worried about. Mom and Dad aren't going to call in Bobby's loan.
He is absolutely right. More nations need to take a stance and just turn their backs to that market. At least for now. When things crumble, which they will, the people can rally and vote someone in who actually cares for their country and wants it to be in the 21 century, not 1925.
I think at this point it's going to require the removal of the entire Reich-publican party from the United States. Otherwise will be back to this same point in a hundred years.
I agree that we swing from right to left all the time. This time around we've swung WAY right. Rich Democrats are just as bad as rich Republicans. There's a lot of change that has to happen to clean up the political sector of the United States.
Absolutely 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Sorry but he is right. every business and company. Shut down their factories around the world because it was cheaper to make it in China the world factory. They hold everyone's cards. Even if the European Union stopped trading with US, the US would go bankrupt.
Because not every country is China. They have grown themselves to become a global super power. Most other countries do not have anywhere near the same level of leverage
I get that. But we are a 'baby' country. And many of the countries he's dicking around with are centuries old. They have immeasurable sway. They all need to use it. Tell him to fkn pound sand.
Because it’s beggar thy neighbour policy. Someone needs to buy. China has exported making its own people poorer. It’s the wrong policy. It doesn’t excuse Trump’s idiotic policy of course.
US leaders and businesses look no further than the next quarter's profits. China has 50 year plans and 5000 years of history. I distinctly remember GW in SOTU speech saying he's directing that by 2025 this and that. It's 2025. Nobody even knows what that was anymore.
That’s painfully obvious to anyone watching. I don’t think I could name anyone less curious or educated example. He’s just a cheap suit filled with rage and cholesterol.
tRUmp is a con, grifter, pedophile, extortionist, rapist, defrauder, Putin loving, dictator that has been elected U.S. President...twice.
Sad time for U.S.A. and democracy.
Trump and Vance as well need to be removed now. We don't have time to wait. Mike Johnson, who would be next in line, is not an option either. He might actually be the worst of the three because he is slightly more intelligent and is a religious fanatic.
Pretty much says it all. USA will have none of the products were used to. So China loses 15%, it’s chicken feed. And as others have pointed out, China has so many investments in the USA that it could cripple the US economy in tandem. USA cannot viably make these products. It’s a stark choice.
China stops trading with the US ... end of the stories. Chinese products will be sold somewhere else, "american" products manufactured in China will not be sold in the US anymore. Manufacturing plants will have to be build in the US for Americans to access these products....
Its gonna cost an arm and a leg to Americans billionaires to do so. They will need to staff them, which will end up creating a class of super poor if they pay at the level Chinese worker were paid, or they will have to increase the price of their product making them less accessible to Americans ...
They will also collapse the USA dollar by dumping some of the trillion dollars they hold! Destabilising the dollar & reducing USA purchasing power! Countries will dump the dollar as the international standard & go back to gold. That is why the value of gold has increased by 100%
From what I read China is already dumping treasury instruments. They are not playing Trump's game. He needs to consider they might be playing 3D chess.
America was powerful not because we were the biggest or the baddest—it was because people chose to work with us. Now we’ve alienated everyone, and they’re building the future without us. We fumbled the global bag

Metaphorically.
Trump is facing countries that have been using trade & currency as a weapon for 5000 years.
If China dumped its debt, they would all follow, the USA would be bankrupt , really, move its gold reserves bankrupt.
