Proof your public library loves you: they leave you alone while you read, they don’t mind when you bring your kids over, and they’ll let you borrow any of their books, even the hardcovers

Many can even get you into local attractions that require a ticket for free, or let you borrow a sewing machine, 3D print something, or borrow their board games (even the super grown up ones that cost like $100).
One library near me even has a satellite office that lets kids check out toys.
They also allow you to use computers, print off paperwork you may need, they have games and craft project items and so much more. My library even has an adult coloring event once in a while.
I love libraries. I love schools. I love museums and art galleries. I love anything that helps spread knowledge and gives people the chance to expand their minds.
I used to work at my hometowns library. It’s the best job I ever had. It didn’t pay sh!t but I loved it. The children’s dept along with the rest of us hated when parents dropped their kids and left like the library was a daycare.
As a teenager, the Central Lending Library in my town was my refuge, from school bullies and my chaotic family life. The lovely librarians looked out for me but more importantly guided my reading and made me the avid reader I still am 40 years later.
They don't care if you sit at a desk staring at the wall for twenty minutes, and certainly don't use that time to ask you if you wouldn't mind taking the kid to the dentist.
Let it be known to all the lesbians and heterosexual men out there that if i smile it is a sign that i love you and not that i'm performing my job as a cashier.
My local library carries a bunch of different TTRPG rulebooks (not dnd though), which are kind of expensive to buy so if gaming groups here wanted to try out another system they can just borrow it at the library. Talk about awesome.
I go in to use my library sewing machine. I can use the 3d printer, any one of their 25 computers, take guitar lessons etc etc etc. My library is the best social system in my city. Oh, and my son plays chess there too.
Ok. That last bit about hardcovers. I felt that. In my defense if I really loved a book enough to try to get others to read it I would buy it in paperback and lend that to them. I also wouldn't ask for it back.
It's probably the one place cops won't hassle you too. Seriously, one of them noticed I was using a computer to watch anime and gave me a flyer for a local meetup.
When I was a pre teen, my mom would drop me off at the Donelson Library for hours and let me hang out there and decide which books I wanted to stay and read and what to check out and bring home. Such a luxury to have that quiet time.
As far as I know, there are two different translations of, “The hunchback of Notre Dame.” At a mobile rural library, in a rural Colorado community, I asked for a specific version. The librarian was a little shocked, because a book mobile didn’t usually ask for this. Thanks for inter library loans!
If everyone else in your life treated you with the type of respect and kindness that the public library does, you would have nothing much to complain about 😁
AND if you accidentally leave that bookmark - you know the one, your niece made it at preschool - if you leave it in one of our books, we'll try to reunite you with it.
I passed by our local library today about 4pm, their parking lot was over flowing. I was impressed and tickled to see huge support for getting smarter...not getting R dumber.
I spent much of my teenaged years at my local lybrary to the point that as an adult when I came in after not being there for years The workers still recognized me :p
Even though I've unintentionally stolen from them for my whole life! 😭🫣 I haven't stepped foot in a library in years because I feel like EVERYONE instantly knows it and I'll have to remortgage the house to pay them back!!
Well if you can afford that, Do you fancy doing mine too?! 🤭 will be in £ so you save about $30 😂
Infact, dude...get a kindle! They're alot cheaper than $100 per year! Unless you leave them under your pillow 🤔 OK! I'm back to the library...I've killed 3 of those bad boys!
went to my library last night to pick up an audiobook and use their computers to print something out i needed
it's on the 2nd floor. homeless man was using the computers, and his shopping cart full of his stuff right next to him. no issues at all. lovely people working at my library
And they greet and expect my 84 yr old dad to come in for a different puzzle (yes, they have puzzles) at least twice a week.
While my mom finds her newest read (in large print).
The public library in Bellevue Washington complained about my autistic son being too noisy, so I left and never went back. This was like 7 years ago and I am still kind of upset about it.
I’ve always wondered if that bit in the movie Se7en was true where the FBI had flagged library books that they tracked who checked them out. Hilarious the idea was shocking at the time.

They have a copy machine
You can sit there for two hours while the mechanic fixes your car.
They're safe havens for readers of all ages, welcoming families and offering an endless world of knowledge and stories, all without judgement.
Their generosity and quiet support are indeed proof of their love for the community. 📚💖✨
Of course there should be either special times or rooms for children
