sometimes i think about opportunities that series like pokemon are missing out on and i get sad. you could argue "just make a fangame" but there's like a 50% chance you would be found dead in your home if it got too much attention

I think pokemon is doing pretty well lately. If it weren't for how unstable it was, Scarlet/Violet could have been one of the greatest pokemon games of all time and still arguably is in terms of plot.
But it's all about the huge franchise, and the games could use a bit more time and care.
Pokemon lore being so unexplored by the game’s themselves is such a tragedy. They invented time travel like 28 years ago and only one game since has brought it up
You know what the worst part is? GameFreak knows it too. So, they bait us with the hope of that one ultimate unicorn game, only to disappoint us with low-effort slop.
I just made this point about Fromsoft's Souls games under another post.
And the thing is all your points stand except it would be the psychotic fans, not the company itself, threatening you for improving the thing they think they like.
You know a company has maliciously greedy people at the top making every decision when a game like Palworld comes out, destroys the bank, crazy positive reaction...and Nintendo decides to sue instead of creating a proper mainline PC/modern console game with modern graphics >.>
Regarding Palworld, Nintendo has historically left Pokémon-clones alone (YoKai Watch, Cassette Beasts and Palworld until recently) but that had to change when Sony acquired Palworld because now it’s a threat to Pokémon’s brand identity being wielded by Nintendo’s oldest and bitterest enemy.
i genuinely hope sony does something cool with palworld. it feels silly to be rooting for PALWORLD of all things but sony is a competent company and they have the opportunity to do things nintendo/tpc/gamefreak are too scared to
Moon Channel has a great breakdown on this whole situation that’s worth watching to understand the context of what is happening in the suit and why. It’s way bigger and riskier than you’d expect and indicates Nintendo sees a Sony controlled Palworld as an existential threat https://youtu.be/8apzrwv75i0?si=ZVCEHeb5azPN-q3f
While I don’t dispute that every company has greedy ghouls near the top, I think it’s notable that fan projects in Japan are far FAR less likely to get C&Ds or sued than in the US, and that’s because of our protect it or lose it copyright/trademark laws here in the US. Nintendo HAS to be aggro here
Mainstream fan games do get taken down but you can still find them. Rom hacks are carrying the pokemon fan in me. I can’t play switch-era games unless it’s with my kids because I think they’re irredeemably bad.
i also struggle to think that it's worth immediately jumping into and investing a bunch of time/energy/resources over an idea, or even multiple — you'd have to be really, really passionate to justify it and even then
It's simple- just make sure you don't make money off of the fan game, or even have the possibility of making money off of it, or ever receive a gift or any kind of outside support, and actually make sure you never think of making money, and I think your odds drop to about 45%
I’m not sure I have the capacity to even try to figure out fully things like copyright and patent law. It kind of blows my mind that you could get sued because another company might own the rights to catching something in a round object or after a 3 count, lol. That’s where they’ll get you.
nintendo is long out of ideas i have given the new games a chance as i bought a switch pretty late when they where coming out and it's just idiotic what gamefreak calls a brand new game 0 innovation and people still praise them for ugly graphics
Ive been playing through scar/vi recently and thought a similar thing. I feel they are heading in the right direction in some ways but taking steps backwards in others
That is the pain of being a fan of a Nintendo product/nintendo-related product
Trust me, as a Metroid fan, I get it
But FUCK IT, do it anyways. Sure, yeah, the Nintendo Ninjas might stop ya but that wouldn't stop the fangame or fanart or whatever you got from circulating in the fanbase
Have you played XD gale of darkness for the gamecube? It has a bunch of cool unique mechanics, and imo the best pokemon battle animations to date. Easily one of my favorite Pokemon games.
Really there's only been as far as I know a handful of fangames which have been taken down. And none through legal action. All of them have been C&D which is just a strongly worded letter from Nintendo or copyright claims which is just the platform taking down the posts about it
