It’s time for the GOP’s periodic game of “teachers are communist groomers indoctrinating our children to be godless anti-American transsexuals and we should arm them.”

FWIW that new Utah law requiring armed people at every single school, whether a cop, or hired armed guard, or just some volunteer who shows up and gets $500 one time, excludes teachers & principals from being among the armed "guardians".
Spitballing here but couldn't some of the older pupils be armed? Sort of enhanced hall monitor status. That would probably be cheaper overall since they could bring guns in from home and be paid in food vouchers.
All students should be armed. When the teacher asks questions students should fire their weapon instead of raising their hand. Woke classes on English or math should be replaced by classes on the awesomeness of guns. Any student not great at gun stuff must go work at the local meat plant.
It’s important, for rapid emergency response, that all student owned guns be kept either in open cubbies for immediate access, or worn open carry in the classroom.
They’ve already started the process of putting the cameras in all our classrooms. I assume the panic buttons will come next. Our admin said they’d prefer to hire a guardian than have a resource officer because they’d rather “pay our people.” I’m just not looking forward to any of this.
It may be better to have anyone than a cop because not only are cops trigger happy they continually want to abuse and arrest students any chance they get. At least with a rent a cop or mystery volunteer, children won't be being regularly criminally charged.
I agree. A cop on campus is the worst option. The only silver lining to this bill is that it can’t be someone who is a classroom teacher (except at really tiny schools). But there’s another law encouraging teachers to get trained and concealed carry anyway, so...
Well according to Trump children go to school as boys and then the next day come home as girls and while teachers can’t afford their own supplies it’s completely funded by public schools so yeah obviously….because that’s something sane people would say. How the fuck do people take him seriously ffs
As the #Alabama3 so memorably put it

On the other hand, a voluntary program of arming teachers seems like a superior alternative to putting cops in schools. Better it be a member of the school community who already has years of experience handling troublesome children in a nonviolent manner.
It’s gonna be hard for any teacher to come off as benevolent to a troubled child if they’re carrying. And the students will know who is and isn’t. I’m not in favor of weapons in schools, but at least the cop can be seen as a separate entity from the one who gives you math homework.
Fair point. I've just heard a bunch of stories of cops overreacting to unruly children. School kids act out and do stupid stuff, and most of the time there's no need for a law enforcement response, so I'm not fond of a constant police presence.
I totally agree. I don’t want either, but as a teacher I do not want myself or my colleagues to be armed. If it has to be someone (and in my state, it does), I’d rather it be a non-police person with training in education, mental health. and child development. But not a classroom teacher.

And yeah, working in Public Education, these things hit hard.
Do not arm the teachers. Ever.
Anything less puts children at risk.
(I have to add “/s”, I’m sure.)
Obviously the cognitive dissonance has completely destroyed everything above the spinal cord, and we're not sure about that.

Now y'all know why the GQP didn't want to do anything about lead service lines.
