This is exactly right. Elon fooled lots of people into thinking that his acquisition of Twitter was about protecting free speech—it was always about reengineering a public square into a reactionary echo chamber. Which is why he’s flirting with running the same play again with MSNBC.

I remember that story making almost no waves when it came out and garnering a lot of “but he’s a genius” hand waving when it came out.
It was an unimaginable windfall for the investors. Inconceivable they'd ever run into a bigger moron with the cash and inclination.
As you say, a closely-held company can ignore that pressure, at least most of the time.

Doing that to a news platform that requires a strong margin of profitability to be competitive is insane. It will be reduced to a low-rent, low-subscription podcast for nazis within months.
Nothing about that purchase has ever said "freedom of speech" to me.
On the other hand Conservatives engaging in massive financial waste with zero concern for profit seems like a problem that self corrects eventually.
