this is so wild, idk if people elsewhere have seen this, right now dems are winning a brand new supermajority in the oregon state house by a grand total of 34 votes

The super majority, if the numbers hold up allows for increasing taxes without any Republican votes. It helps with taxation and spending measures, but Oregon has always been very factions of shades of blue in terms of general legislation and legislative support
What happens if a voter writes in the name of a candidate who is also on the ballot? Is their vote counted for that candidate, or does it not count at all?
being an American from a Catholic background seems to mean you’ve got cousins all over the place from coast to coast because your grandad had 12 siblings, all of whom had a bunch of kids, and their kids all had a bunch of kids
weddings and funerals require significant logistical planning lol
The high speed rail corridor from Eugene to Vancouver BC is ideal. If you have a need to go to BC, please consider taking the AMTRAK CASCADES which is at least an hour faster than the COAST STARLIGHT.
-Focus efforts on developing rural Oregon
-Build mutual aid networks to brave the coming storm (and prepare to fight or even secede if it gets absolutely untenable).
-Deport Phil Knight to Iowa
it's a full legislative supermajority too like we rule all parts of the oregon state government with an iron fist and republicans are utterly disenfranchised. good. fuck those loser creeps i hope they cry
Well, they can still do the walkout thing but (a) then they couldn't run again and (b) if that happens again, an initiative to end the 2/3 quorum once and for all will get on the ballot and will pass.
need to safeguard trans rights definitively and decisively. go further. protect against unreasonable demands from other states, federal intrusion. put teeth in the sanctuary state.
Oh ok. I’m on the other coast. But in some places in the country if the votes are close it triggers an automatic recount, but idk which states specifically do that. Our election system is really like 1000 different election systems.
There will likely be a mandatory recount, yes. There are ~800 ballots to be cured, which doesn’t begin until Nov. 20. Won’t know for sure until after the curing period.
My state! (Though not my district.) This sort of thing is exactly why I voted blue up and down the ballot. The presidency wasn't in contention here, but other races were, and AFAICT the Democrats won in every contest I voted on. I like my Blue state and wanna keep it Blue!
Yes, we have fusion voting. Major party candidate can be nominated by multiple parties and up to three can appear on the ballot (I think it’s 3). That’s how most WFP and Independent Party nominations are made.
That’s great! I knew there were other states with some kind of fusion voting (I’m in NY), and we really need a full resurgence. It used to be so common!
I do think full fusion voting is ideal, so the party you vote on gets the support (as does the candidate) —it was instrumental in getting rid of Dems who voted Republican in NY. But anything is great nonetheless!
I think I would be weirded out by multiple lines for the same candidate, but if you’re used to it… Here, what counts is voters by party registration. So to earn “major party” status a certain number of voters must be registered for the party in last election. I can see why your way makes sense.
So an issue with our system is that people who want to grow a minor party but also participate in our closed primaries have to switch to Dem registration for primaries then re-register under their preferred minor party before the general. Not as good in terms of growing minor parties.
I'm not sure if it counts as Fusion voting. Here, a candidate can be nominated by more than one party, but there's still just one entry per candidate on the ballot. (Whereas I think in New York they are listed separately per party, which count together against rivals but still noted separately.)
Gotcha! Yes NY and CT have full fusion voting, so the party line you vote on both supports the candidate and the party you vote on. It’s been so effective at getting progressives ahead locally.
Let's get rid of the stupid electoral college so every vote counts for president. It may not have mattered this time, but remember 2000 & 2016! We've had enough of a handful of states deciding who leads our country. 💙
Quorum is 40 in the house, supermajority is 36 seats. Allows us to raise taxes or create new ones without Republican votes. We did alleviate but not cure the hiding thing by banning them from seeking reelection if they have 10 unexcused absences.
A law was written making it so anyone who tries it (i.e. has unexcused absences for 10 days or more) won't be able to run for re-election. Some did it anyway last session and fought up to the state Supreme Court, and lost. So, they can still do it, but they lose their job next term.
Not trying to be a voice of doom on this beautiful misty Saturday in Oregon, but we lost a seat, previously having 35. A super majority would be 40 seats.
MAGA will continue work hard to chip away at our blue numbers with misinformation and repeated lies. This is when we get back to work.
Damn. Oregon has been on a knife edge for a long time, but it's finally tipping towards practical utility. Eastern OR (aka western Idaho, along with eastern WA) no longer matters. Beautiful to see. Cascadia FTW.
I am not trying to be a pessimist when I say those numbers are uncomfortably close. I think Christine Drazen came closer than usual for a Republican in the last gubernatorial election.
But where is Tina? She’s doing nothing. Hope one of these other elected officials primary her- with ideas like AOC to unite the working class against billionaires. Voters won’t approve more taxes except on billionaires.
holy shit this would mean the Dems can raise taxes without any Republican support. the real estate agent horse girl Trumpers I went to high school with in Salem are going to be absolutely paralyzed with fear over this. lol. lmao.
they've been crowing for two weeks about a Trump victory that will not meaningfully improve their lives in any way without realizing they're also getting a state legislative supermajority that will enact their worst nightmare (marginally higher taxes to fund social services)
Being apart of the Oregon political scene for a few years has really taught me that EVERY SINGLE VOTE makes a huge difference. I have seen party positions and priorities completely change with a single deciding vote. Local elections need our voices. We can be the change we want to see in the world.💚
