it's wild to me that the public library just doesn't open until noon most days. i really must be the only person in portland who wakes up at a rational time

I felt this way all the time when I lived in montreal (famously a late rising city) but now that I staff a Cultural Institution full time I get it kinda. every so often we've got someone waiting right at opening (10 here not noon to be fair) but for the most part I'm filling the time til lunch
i was going crazy with this at the coast this last weekend, even with retail stuff, like your store isn't open until 11? i've been out watching birds for like 4 hours already and you're just opening?
dude the coast is the worst for this! last time we stayed in astoria we just couldn't get anything for breakfast? we just went hungry. the fucking bakery wasn't open. it's a bakery!!
My preferred wake-up time is 5:30am at the latest and I'm toast by 7pm. No I do not want to do everything after 5pm when I'm tired and everything is busy.
Though I remember having the opposite problem in college, could never find late night coffee
i know they don't have the budget to be open all the time. my annoyance is- why is everyone else in town such a sleepyhead that the hours before noon could be deemed the expendable ones
Yeah it sucks for people who work later in the day. Usually this comes up at city/county meetings for budget hearings. My library had some days that were 10-6 and others that were 12-9 to accommodate different work schedules.
i know it's so people can go after work! that's great, maybe they could be go BEFORE work sometimes? or not everything needs to be arranged around 9-5 schedules? like half the people i know work other schedules
I work overnight and part of the joy of that is having afternoons off to do stuff that needs getting done, part of why I've kept this job so long is that I'm also afraid to go back into that 9-5 world because of exactly what you're talking about, WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO DO OTHER THINGS?!
I wonder if the primary driver is staffing related (i.e. reduction from two shifts to one) as opposed to end user experience? No clue, just spitballing.
yes i know it's budget related but i'm saying why were the hours before noon not busy, why is the coffeeshop also not open until 10, nothing happens in the morning here generally and it's very boring
If you’re in multnomah you can get a card at the Vancouver library as well for free! And they open before noon and have a lot of online resources. Just saying. It’s right off the interstate, just over the bridge.
depends on the day, today is one of the days they stay open until 8 but usually it's 6. which like, i get that it's set up so people can go after school and work and stuff, but also the library is one of the main things of stay at home moms and young kids, and my kids' *bedtime* is 6, so. :(
Those are lousy hours. Definitely let the branch manager know you're interested in earlier hours. It helps make the case to funding authorities more strongly than what library staff say.
the whole system is on a unified schedule now, as of a couple weeks ago, they'd have to change all the hours for the whole county, which like, they should do, but i doubt they're going to
i know right? one storytime for toddlers per week, on a weekend when we always want to be doing other fun stuff with papa, right during normal toddler naptime, and also nothing in the morning during the long weekday mornings we actually need to kill time. thanks!
There’s a line every day at 9 am waiting to get into our branch libraries in Columbus. You can use their computer centers, get research help and attend kids events. They also offer two hour bookings for small study or meeting rooms you sign out just like a book, for study, work or whatever.
