3/ On a majority vote they win. That's obvious. They're giving up the 60 vote leverage for the opportunity vote and lose on their own bill. It's not even Kabuki anymore. That's the plan. If you don't like that plan, I'd call your senators.

Yep. They think we’re complete idiots. Thing is, taking their constituencies as a whole, we are. Most of us are clueless, have no idea what is happening, don’t give a damn.
How many years has the base asked our Dems in the Senate to eliminate the filibuster so we can pass good legislation and been told, "No, we might need it when we're in the minority!" And now we're in the minority at a key point in history and this very same Dem leadership pisses it away.
Where does a person go when they can't stand the embarrassment of the democratic party and will never align with the evil of the republicans? Seriously! I'm a voter who doesn't have anyone who represents anything I believe in.
I hv same problem in reverse… Dem Senators so comfortably ensconced here in Cal they feel like they can ignore their Dem constituents. Still, frustrating as it is, don’t see any alternative except keep raising our voices.
They really must think we're fools. They give away the one weapon they have for a dramatic performance where they can bemoan the Republicans. The Dems are finished. We need to form an alternative opposition party.
It would be easier to take over the Democratic party. We have a template that works. Do when the Republican Tea party did. Start locally where a take over is easy and work your way up
Isn’t it past time for Dems to remove Schumer from leadership? I thought so in 2021 after watching him leave all the work resisting the 1st trump regime to Pelosi, and he’s done nothing to change my mind.
I feel so helpless down here, thinking about my congressional delegation consisting of Blackburn, Hagerty, and Ogles. Not two brain cells to rub together among the trio.
How could they possibly think this will play well? “We folded and let the Republicans have their bill. But don’t worry! We got votes on amendments that we knew we’d lose!”
They do want that. They think they can run on that in 2026 and 2028. That's their whole strategy. Hope it gets bad enough that people come running back to them without having to make any changes to the party.
Schumer got rolled by McConnell as majority leader and as minority leader and now Thune. His and Durbin's idea of fighting is sending sternly worded letters.
What’s the exit plan if the Dems shut down the govt and end up taking the blame? They will either cave now or will have to cave a week or two from now.
Agreed. Get up or get out! I have reached a breaking point with the Democratic Party. Considering changing my registration for the first time since I was 18 (47 years). I think it’s time.
Last straw indeed. I’m done with them all if they can’t realize this is one of the last chances they’ll have to make everyone stop and pay attention. They have leverage, fucking use it. This whole, the gov shut down will further empower Elon and co, is such bullshit. What limits are there now!!
This sounds exactly how they will cave. How absurd to think that they can improve the package after they've given up the only card they have. It's so exasperating to think that in the face of an unprecedented executive crime spree, this is how the Democrats fight back!
I can't donate much, like $30 each cycle & also do postcards. I know they don't give a shit abt my small donations but they sure as shit like to say "average donation of $27" "grass roots" etc.
I'm done if they vote for this. They don't care abt the poor people they beg for money. Only the rich.
I saw an analysis something like this earlier in a Hill piece.
It sounds like there is some strong dissent but there doesn't seem to be too many Dems willing to strongly go on the record about opposing it. The voices on the record go in one direction.
The Washington Post article flags Murray and Murphy as opponents. I have also seen Coons a strong "no." But, the opposition seems to be more than three or so people, right?
hey josh, your article said that the Senate Dem's strategy is to "throw voters off the scent." Can you help me understand why on earth they'd do such a thing? You were smart enough to see through Schumer's seemingly strong statement but I still feel quite betrayed and frustrated.
Reading the NYT between the lines it is painfully obvious the donor class wants to avoid trouble. The whole action is being « pushed by activists » and «There’s still time for the Democrats to reverse »!
& my ivy'd credentialed friends will talk about how dumb people are to not vote or vote Orange Turd. Thing is, Turd derides the insular eliti$t f'k$ like schumer, & the uncredentialed do NOT need a yale/harvard law degree to know all this bullshit is lying ass bullshit crap on the know nobodie$.

Do they really want the Vichy to stick to them?
Because what they are proposing is dishonest collaboration with fascists. There is no other way to reasonably spin that.
I very doubt that Schumer and Kaine etc _want_ to sit back uselessly and watch the government torn apart, but ...
Nice work Senate Dems. Jfc
why do we keep him around again?
I doubt it would be to timidly put up token resistance and cede the best tool in his toolbox.
