I saw some of these in the theater. I didn't like all of them, and I didn't know about others. This show is telling me about movies I might like to see on streaming. I don't see a problem with that. Everybody doesn't have to be a film buff, but why can't those who are have their fun things?
The more I hear about many of the nominated films. The less I want to see them. I’m looking for an escape in my movies. Not my trauma already in progress , reflected back at me with unexpected glimpses, of my trauma yet to come. Things I never thought we’d see in films is now celebrated.
I always thought this is a bit of a false dichotomy (no pissyness intended!). I find it a great escape to worry about the film’s people’s problems instead of my own. Sometimes these movies also make me feel lucky (At least I haven’t had to deal with that shit!). To each his own.
Here’s the thing. How we experience cinema is very personal. With shows like Star Wars, Star Trek and even The Mandolorian I see them as entertaining. They’re even an escape. Others dig deep into the human condition and go places I’d rather not. So usually I don’t. That’s just me.
IT'S JUST THE WHOLE GODDAMN IDEA OF THIS HUUGE EVENT OF PEOPLE WHO PRETEND TO BE PEOPLE FOR A LIVING, GATHER AND SUCK EACH OTHER OFF & GIVE OUT AWARDS....WHEN THE COUNTRY IS ON FIRE !!!!!
Don't you find it IRONIC....millions upon millions upon millions of the general public pays for theatre tickets & streaming costs etc etc.....WHICH IS THE ONLY TRUE OPINION THAT SHOULD COUNT..............
BUT THEY VOTE ON OSCARS, NOT US.
It’s in poor taste all around. I have to wonder if they’re thumbing their noses at the financial devastation the Admin has caused and offering their gift bags worth hundred of thousands of luxury items as they usually do. Do we really need this in this climate? 🙄. That’d be a no.
"The movie by that director that directed that other movie you didn't see, winner of 4 Marion County Fair judges Best Participant Award and starring the brother-in-law of Jean-Claude VanDamme!"
But…Awards shows are huge sources of jobs for Hollywood professionals and that area’s economy which have been punished over and over by Covid, Strikes, AI and now fires! Have a freaking heart?! These people make the movies that entertain us. You want AI to make all of our dreams/nightmares then?
My wife made me watch that bullshit and after the credits rolled I wanted to beat someone like they owed me money and I was an inch away from divorcing her.
And I was high! And that didn’t fucking improve things one goddamn bit.
My favorite from a lifetime ago was an acceptance speech for some obscure category like best documentary on the migration of the Speckle-Throated Burrowing Five-Toed Yak. She simply said "I would like to thank The Lord Of The Rings for not being eligible for this category".
I have followed you for a long time. Usually love your posts. Not this one. These films are art. High quality. Many people have seen these amazing films
I've seen most of them and they're all worth seeing. Part of the role of the Oscars is to bring attention to films you might not otherwise have known about and several are lower budget independent films that need the publicity.
I saw "The Substance" & loved it, and tried to watch most of the others but turned them off after 10 minutes. My judgment isn't very attuned with those who judge Oscars, so I'm rooting for Coralie Fargeat & Demi Moore & The Substance.
last year i bought the oscar winners and nominees that i thought i would be interested in from Amazon... just a question of where i buy them from now on...
Exactly! Wife and I got duped years ago and ended up watching a movie called Lost in Translation after the Oscars. We both had identical “what in the happy horseshit did we just watch” expressions afterwards. Never again.
Paying famous people millions of dollars and giving them a billionaire lifestyle for simply doing their job is not enough for them
They want medals and statues as well.
The Oscars are the pinnacle of awards season, or as I call it "when some of the world's pretty people get together, get sloshed, and say nice things about each other that they mostly don't mean."
Right? I used to make a point of seeing every film. Only heard of three films. They don’t get released in the theaters anymore. Watched Conclave on Netflix but 😩. Can’t get taken away like you can in the theatre. Ending up turning off the #OSCARS because I had only seen Conclave and Wicked.
In today's times these award shows are becoming rather meaningless. With so many movies now on a dozen or more streaming services people can't afford to subscribe to, these films are not being seen by most people.
It does not sound like you, or I are part of WE when it comes to celebrating these movies. It's a huge promotion for people who aren't us and has nothing to do with us.
I would watch every one of them if any would be released in my theatre. I look each week. Only films that made it to my theatre were WICKED and CONCLAVE.
Ikr. Who tf didn't atleast see Dune II? Wicked made quite a bit of money too i believe. If op is reading this, Nosferatu and The Substance are excellent if you like horror movies.
The Oscars have not grown with their industry. Imagine if only 2 male & 2 female performers won anything at the Grammys & their songs only had a few thousand plays? Or if the Tony awards didn't have separate categories for original & revivals?
I usually agree with your posts, but please don't assume everyone is the same. I personally know and have seen many of the films nominated. Enjoying the arts and using them for escapism is more important now than ever in order to maintain our sanity.
I was curious as to the % of movies released in a year that would be shown at my local cineplex. After 3 months it long-tailed to 13%. That's a hideously low %. All we got was Hollywood schlock. Nowhere was there any indie or foreign films. No wonder I quit going to the movies.
People should try to enjoy some of the nominees. Anora had no depth and was nothing like they portrayed it, but some are meaningful and deep like ""Sugar cane,"
Doc ... depressing, but good. Conclave I found to be fascinating.
Marie didn't even get a nomination and Angelina nailed it. The Oscars o
Sorry @nothoodlum.bsky.social but this is now more false than ever, what with the proliferation of streaming services. That said, Sean Baker was right; see movies in the theater whenever you can.
I've been hearing entirely too much about Emilia Perez. A racist transphobic pile of shit by a French director, yet everything is being blamed on the non-white female actors.
The workers, the creators behind the scenes deserve accolades. Films are an important art form. Over paid actors aside, films should be celebrated as much as a beautiful painting or a striking photograph or a moving piece of writing.
I used to make and effort to watch every movie nominated for best picture. It was something I really enjoyed with my sister we would stay up late eat junk and watch.
Now I couldn’t give a shit.
I just scrolled through the red carpet images and recognized two people. Maybe these were just the early birds. Anyway, no clue who most of them are, but that's likely because they are in movies I've never heard of and will never actually see. 👍

Fuck!
Of course I've never enjoyed Conan, so that has something to do with it.
"Here's my butt and, doesn't everyone want to fuck me or What."
Aren't there any pills for this? the Good Kind?
Al the good ones weren't even nominated and the award to Adrien Brody was a big fu@king farce.
That's why I didn't (and probably will never) watch it.
They want medals and statues as well.
The Substance, too.
So true...
#cynicism :)
I'm a book reader. Movies end up disappointing me.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 to all! Rock on!
That movie was mid as hell
I just like foxes.

Or in short Democratic leadership.
I agree with the Academy on all the winners 💙💙💙

Probably why Actors’ Movie about Actor Acting keeps winning…
Classism.

This is SO TRUE!
I tried to watch "Oppenheimer" last year before the Oscars and just had to switch it off after about 30 minutes!
I lak the movie stars.
As a film enthusiast I do try to watch the movies being awarded but...
Overall I agree and I'm still cackling.
