Not for much longer in my case. Thanks to years of Tory cuts, which Labour won't reverse, my local council is effectively bankrupt. Their genius strategy is not to close locations, because that would look bad, but instead to get rid of most of the staff and replace them with (more) volunteers...

They also make their libraries into community centers in small towns. Ours has a trivia night, kids' programs, music Mondays, etc. They are essential in the rural areas where they are most threatened by MAGA.

I used to get tired of people saying I must read books all day. However, in my first job as a children's librarian, I was required to read and bone up on the literature and was rostered for a two hour reading block every day. It was my dream job.

A large part of my MLS was dedicated to critical thinking and teaching folks how to determine if information sources are reliable. I think that is an extremely important skill to teach, especially in the AI era. Take an extra few seconds to really look at something before sharing it on social media.

I teach it! Some of my favorite lessons are reliable sources, understanding primary and secondary sources. I wish we didn’t have the weight of technology weighing us down. We could do even more if we could just librarian.

I think that many (most?) people are unaware how well-educated, articulate and open-minded (read "non-judgmental") librarians are. I don't know how the terrible stereotype of priggish librarians became prevalent.

Not usually, although it depends. I’m a reference librarian, so I read lots of books to find answers for patrons who are looking for information. And since I’m at a history and genealogy library, I do get to read some things that are interesting. But we don’t get to just read for our own enjoyment.

My mother worked in a university library when I was a kid and I would go into work with her and refile cards in the card catalog. I also helped install the security chips in the books when they got a “tattle tape” system. Just know that some of us appreciate what you do. ❤️
