It is fortunate. In my county in WNC we used to have a real newspaper with a real editor but we don’t anymore. While it exists in name, it’s now a brochure for the GOP in our county. No independent journalism, no letters to the editor, just publishing verbatim the propaganda the GOP hands them.

One of the early moves of the hard right in this country was to buy up rural newspapers that didn't earn enough to reward their owners. But they delivered enough to reward rich right wing groups. They could deliver propaganda and kill or distort any news left of center. They did the same with radio.

I agree that local papers help keep local communities informed, but I would argue that being owned by larger conglomerates does not necessarily mean they are well served.
