i love fallout but ya. not only 1 and 2 but also all the bethesda games are kinda like this. the first hour or so of skyrim is genuinely kind of hard and then you spend 150 hours absolutely obliterating anyone who looks at you cockeyed https://bsky.app/profile/nomadenhaft.bsky.social/post/3lgzba4sl722g

I see you’re acquainted with the Fallout franchise.

Souls games are for people who don't like hard games but want to feel like they've beaten one. It's like a guided tour in a 'haunted' prison.
It took ages to get past the third level of Bart vs the Space Mutants.
Ninja Turtles was an exercise in futility.
Battle Toads was literally impossible.
I fell in love with the atmosphere and story of 1 despite the gameplay issues, and 2 has probably the best concept, story, cast, and understanding of social psychology of the series.
Now I usually have a build planned before I even buy a game and I can dawdle through side quests until I'm over-leveled.
The more you handicap your build, the more fun it is IMO. Think: no magic builds, zero strength builds + no ranged attacks
Which is at least part of why I find I sink the most hours into simulation games whose complexity morphs as you play; Workers and Resources and Factorio are great examples.
