this may seem hyper-specific but "i worked at mcdonald's in college for spending money while my coworkers used that same paycheck to raise a child" is one of the realest and most self-aware things i've ever heard any candidate for president say

At mine there was also the divide between people in high school or fresh out of it working to save money for college, trade school, or something else and the kids the same age teasing us about wasting time. One told me I was silly to leave; I would make a good shift manager like her.
in part it could simply be a function of her age, but even the recognition that mcdonald's is not just a job for summer teens and college students in the economy in which we live almost feels like clouds beginning to part
Still true in 2021 when my daughter worked a fast food job (not McD’s) the summer after freshman year of college. Her hourly wage was $1/hr higher than the year round workers’ so they could attract seasonal employees
Right, that kind of story is usually the preface to, "I know the value of hard work and not asking for handouts from the government," rather than "oligarchs are crushing working class people."
i mean even just understanding in a personal way that this isn't the 1960s anymore is something. but learning something from it? and saying it out loud? new to me
The main thing I keep saying to myself over time is "This is fucked up, right?", and it's nice to have someone notice .
And I'm relatively very comfortable... for now.
I don't want anybody to have to stress over economic shit.
yeah why didn't Kamala just get a job as a VP at her dad's totally not corrupt company like Don Jr, ivana and Eric? she definitely is poorer than the last few candidates by a long shot.
Been a while since we've had a president who had direct personal interaction with the working poor of our country. Not blue collar "working class" coal miner, factory worker etc.
But people who work and still live at/near poverty level because the business sector just refuses to pay livable wages.
it's important to work those jobs with people who work them to live.
People who work low wage jobs work just as hard if not harder than people in well paid jobs and they are there because of circumstances beyond their control.
