This is my one real bucket list item, see one of these beauties in the wild. I have long identified with them and also had to listen to people saying βyou know that bird in your tattoo is a maleβ to which Iβm like βyeah motherfucker so am and weβre both prettyβ
I know, it really warms my heart. Iβve been following the conservation efforts in Guatemala and Costa Rica, and those chicks are so ugly-cute but every one is a celebration.
The most spectacular bird sighting of my life was a male quetzal at the Biotopo in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. It flew up through a shaft of sunlight, perched for a second or two, then was gone. They really are sacred beings.
I saw one in Costa Rica. Very hard to spot in the green jungle! A friend saw it first and pointed it out. Didnβt know what it was till we got back to the ranger/park station!
You'll see plenty of great birds, but it doesn't seem like you'll be in cloud forest habitat for quetzals. Arenal has some great birds, and my town of Bijagua is just an hour and a half away from Fortuna.
Just watched a documentary on Costa Rican wildlife and discovered this little bird that looks like it was born with a mowhawk. Itβs kismet itβs here today on BlueSky.

can't imagine actually seeing this lovely bird in real life
Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to write that wonderful description. So many bird lovers with sight challenges thank you. Terrific stuff β€οΈ
I used to struggle with tropical temps and humidity, but you actually adapt fairly quickly to it.
Actually, I was still pretty excited

I got to watch them copulating in Big Bend NP a number of years ago. That was some excitement!
