One of the reasons I love the cover of the first issue of CAPTAIN AMERICA (on news stands in December of 1940 with a cover date of March 1941) is that Jack Kirby and Joe Simon could see, a year ahead of Pearl Harbor, that fascism would be the enemy. Because they were paying attention.

A lieutenant found out about his artistic skills and made him a scout so he performed forward reconnaissance and drew maps.
An extremely dangerous role so he certainly had balls of steel.
