I lived in Singapore for the first three years of the pandemic, and the restrictions were moderate, but certainly heavier than the US. By the time vaccines came, the difference was that most Singaporeans didn't know anyone who had had COVID, whereas most Americans knew someone who had died from it.

Funnily enough this is how lots of USA folks seemed to be characterising NZ's lockdowns from the other side of the world, at the time. I had folks tweeting at me that we had police w guns on the street (our police don't even carry guns normally) enforcing curfews. Never happened.

We had strict rules but enforcement wasn't harsh by and large. One memorable exchange w a tweeter escalated to them telling me my husband (a cabinet minister at the time) was lying to me about having had the vaccine and was going to leave me and the kids to die, or something. Super weird.

I live and work on a tourist island on Lake Eire and Ohio of all places being one of the first and more comprehensive in bringing the restrictions on, they were loosened and then almost eliminated before the season was over, a matter a couple of months. I think the mask mandates were the longest.

Melbourne, Australia had one of the longest and most onerous lockdowns in the world.

It definitely broke a bunch of people's brains here (we call em "cookers"), however I'm convinced that a bunch of folks have recast our lockdown as *their* lockdown.

The US restrictions varied, and some places were certainly more closed, but in general it had nothing on Australia, South Korea, etc. The right-leaning grievance machine works by wrapping in external extremes (see also “Scandinavian socialism”), which it pretends are the material conditions here.

There are places where pandemic mitigations really did involve the state curtailing the civil liberties people could exercise but that basically didn't happen at all in the US. Instead, people's opportunities were limited by regulation of the economy. That's a pretty different kettle of fish imo.

I think most of us had actual fear of the virus and then as some people decided it was just a cold they misremember those bad feelings as being caused by whatever restrictions annoyed them.
