It has been targeted not too long ago by hackers (the site was down for days because of it). As well as, the publishing industry suing the organization that runs the archive currently. People have been trying to archive the site and all the content for years now out of fear of it being shut down.
I discovered it through the Deadhead community, when looking for a source for Grateful Dead concerts. Then I rediscovered it again through classic gaming groups as a source for ROMs.
There are other, better sources too. I search them every day and download lots. But I feel a little antsy about identifying them here. Big Brother watches everything.
I do wish there was a way to fix metadata for items though, if I look up books and filter on English language only I get a TON of Indian, Arabic, etc. literature
WOW! Many, many books on virtually everything people need to know about in order to be well-informed & intelligent are here! An indispensable resource for all human beings who wish to learn all essential knowledge. Please share this!
I'm still trying to read my way through my online library. I don't know how people do it. I am retired and the amount of free entertainment is endless. How do people get bored?
Some of the movies that people have uploaded are still very much copyrighted and pirated. The music is even worse - the Internet Archive itself has pirated music to put on its service. And as for the books, a court has ruled their digital library to be illegal too (they are appealing this).
Yeah, its a very useful website. I found very needy stuff there over the years, especially with pdf files and movies. Even software DVDs are also there
Use it every day.
Older search display a smorgasboard,
but look for symbol of film strip (movie), speaker (radio), open book (print)...
At end of each movie a related suggestion panel will appear, primitive algo but will work.
Lots if it is, and the Wayback machine regularly infringes copyright uploading entire websites without permission and they make you jump through so many loops to get your material removed.
I'm borrowing "Reflecting Men at Twice Aheir Natural Size" by Cline & Spader. A pinch dated, but spot on analysis of mental load burden placed on women by men.
