Isn't that pretty much the entire reason Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol? He had debts to repay and needed cash quickly, so he wrote something quick that he knew would sell. It tickles me that one of the most beloved stories in modern Western literature was basically written in a panic to pay bills.
I am a fan of the Dinos and comics installment where the interviewing dinosaur states that he needs a job to fund his hobbies, and then comments that his hobbies are sleeping indoors and eating food.
Being paid is necessary. It isn't usually sufficient but it is necessary.
People like to cite hunger and (unfulfilled) desire as important factors for performance in an endeavor...for other people.
There's this terrible idea that commerce makes art "impure", failing to note that many of the great works produced by the old masters were done at the behest of people paying a lot of money.
In general I think we would all be happier if our society was more honest about the fact that the reason the vast majority of us work - even at “dream jobs” or “jobs we love” - is because we need money.
