Books too. I own thousands on Kindle. It makes it much easier to move, but I hate that readers pay just as much for a virtual book as they do a real one.
You can buy and own these things to this day. Music? CDs or mp3s (or other formats.) Software, this is a bit trickier at times, but while I can still play that mp3 from 25 years ago, I don't wanna use 25 year old software. People seem to WANT things for monthly payments.
It is the consumers responsibility to sustain their providers income. There used to be enough competition and it was easy to switch providers. Not so much now.
Why get people to pay once when you can make them pay over and over and over? Want heated seats in your car? Luxury auto makers want that to be a service too. Don't pay and the software shuts down. Ridiculous. And it's only going to get worse.
You can still buy and own movies, music, software, etc. People just choose not to, because it's cheaper to rent. That doesn't mean ownership went away, though.
I own the things that bring me joy and passion. But ultimately those things even if owned on paper are ultimately just borrowed as they can't be taken with me/us when we go.
It’s important that we consider the implications of this. Those kindle books you paid for can disappear at a moments notice. If you value the knowledge, buy the physical product!
Job security is also a thing of the past. A long time ago, if you were loyal and worked hard at a company, they valued you and kept you on. Now, everyone is expendable and people flit from one job to another every few years.
Maybe it’s because I’m a boomer, but I’m so unburdened by not having ‘all the things’ anymore.
I can’t imagine being this age without all the conveniences of the tech. Just a perspective… 💙

I am good with not having stacks of plastic CDs that we discovered did scratch too.
I also cherish my vinyl collection too.
Me: because I fucking own them. They belong to me, and it’s a lot harder for anyone to just take them.
Cause it means I actually get to keep the things I purchased.
