MPs pay should be no more than 5 times minimum wage and 3 times median wage. Only eligible if you have attended both primary and secondary schools in state education and have a home in the community (5 years council tax) which you then choose to stand for (no more parachuting into safe seats)

Agree 98%, but surely there should be some exceptions e.g. doctors or other medical professionals doing genuinely socially useful work, getting the pay rate for the job and keeping professional registrations up to date.

I think it depends on the job, and MP for example continuing to practice medicine for example allows them to better understand our NHS

A judge can better understand our justice system etc

But the priority should be the Parliamentary job

For the rule to work there have to be no exceptions.

Even with Doctors.

Also someone can still stay in touch with a profession without doing it.

Especially as an example having an Doctor as NHS minister (instead of a crook like Wes Streeting for example).

Mp's should have contracts of employment like most employees have laying out what their duties are and making it mandatory to carry these out second and third jobs should be outlawed I also believe there should be a limit on how much mp's can receive in personal donations

Judges make individual decisions that affect others, and have been trained for years to do this well.
MPs just vote with dozens on others and have no training. Their salaries are excessive.

That attitude is part of the problem I’m afraid. We need radical change of our entire legislature. That starts with getting better, more capable, less corrupt people in place. £85k is not excessive . It’s peanuts for the responsibility of the role - including making the laws that judges interpret.

I have to disagree. MPs do not write the legislation - Civil Servant lawyers do. And their peers review it. Untrained MPs "merely" vote on it, often with no real knowledge of what they are doing (look at the dismal quality of the debates in Parliament on Bills)

I agree with no more expenses. Yes, I still think £300.000 is way too high. To me, being an MP should be a public service job just as it used to be. Now, it's a career. Ppl say high wages attract better ppl, I don't think that's exactly right either.

To be fair given the level of scorn, disrespect, anger, abuse, & unreasonable expectations voters place on MP`s for as long as I can remember (50 yrs), you can understand why so many smart people avoid politics when the wages are so low, many headteachers earn far more than MP`s, 300k is reasonable

I know what you are saying but I fear that the reality of the power and contacts they have means it will never be just a public service role. High wages do attract talent but it has to come with checks and balances. The temptation to abuse the current broken system is just too strong IMHO

Don't forget expenses have to pay salaries and office costs. So while they look high, it can be deceptive. Should be a standard amount. Legitimate expenses are then easier to scrutinise.

We do need rid of MPs who lack job skills using parliament to get rich. But pilots and doctors, for instance, need to keep skills honed and to show continued activity, and I think parliament needs *more* people who can do real jobs. It's the no-job MPs we need rid of, not the 2-job ones.
